What TV shows were set in the graveyard shift hours?

RSPW's Wacky Best-Friend Neighbor 10 March 2005 22:13:15
Most TV shows are set in the daytime. I find that to be pretty sad.

That's because TV writers have this crazy idea that most people are
awake during the day and asleep at night, so that's the way they write
the shows.

 Night Court.

The John Larroquette Show also started off during the night hours. And
man, it was great - dark, off-kilter humor. But the show literally
jumped the shark when NBC decided it should take place during the day -
cancellation soon claimed the show's life. :(

My favorite was BAYWATCH NIGHTS which, despite the entire series format
being that it was Mitch's night job, despite the theme song stating that
they were out at night, pretty much always took place in broad daylight.

I think the theme song explained it. They were two hearts moonlighting
as one. What that means you decide.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER had daytime scenes, but a lot of night ones
(since vampires are after-sunset kinda guys).

Ditto ANGEL, FOREVER KNIGHT, KINDRED: THE EMBRACED.

The Canadian cop drama NIGHT HEAT. And while I don't watch it, the
premise of THIRD WATCH suggests that it's set at night.

"24" has half the episodes per season set during the nighttime.

Actually, the only show to literally jump the shark was Happy Days.
Only the Fonz could pull off such a feat as jumping the shark.

Michael

Michael Crichton (the Creator) had been a Doctor and probably did that
intentionally to show the long hours and all the stuff that happens to
people all hours of the day.

Another show set at nignt a lot was "The Untouchables" in the early
60s. Also "The Twilight Zone" did some shows where being set at night
was a huge part of the drama. (The Invaders, Nothing in the Dark)

Nick Knight (aka Midnight Cop) was the original title on the pilot movie.

I hope his middle name wasn't "At".

Yep, in 1984. (The actual title was "E/R.")

Yup, it was a sitcom starring Elliot Gould and Mary McDonnell, set in
the Emergency Room of a Chicago hospital. Also starred Conchata
Ferrell, Corinne Bohrer, and Lynne Moody as the nurses. Clooney was
a recurring cast member, playing Ferrell's nephew, a paramedic. And
Jason Alexander as the clueless hospital admin.

It was tied in to THE JEFFERSONS by the appearance of Sherman Helmsley
in one episode (actually a 2-parter, if memory serves) as George
Jefferson, who turned out to be Lynne Moody's uncle.

If you're referring to the Nickelodeon show ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE
DARK?, you're only partly right. The framing sequences featuring the
Midnight Society took place at night, but the "A" story just as often
(if not more often) took place during the daytime.

Yeah, that's the one I meant.
For a kiddy show, it wasn't half bad.

Actually, the only show to literally jump the shark was Happy Days.> Only the Fonz could pull off such a feat as jumping the shark.>
No show has ever ~literally~ jumped any shark. Even Happy Days, where
the phrase originated, only showed a character jumping a shark - the
show itself never literally jumped the shark. It's a metaphor. It can't
be literal.

I believe That 70s Show had a character jump a shark (Fez, in a
daydream), and The Simpsons has had a couple of characters attempt it,
and Arrested Development will in an upcoming episode.

The quirky and long-forgotten "Joe Bash" was a graveyard shift show.

Yeah. Half-hour sitcom on CBS from the early-80s. Gould was the doctor
in charge and Clooney was an orderly named Ace.

Check IMdb.
