Ric Flair is overrated. Discuss.

He's good, but not among the G.O.A.T. group of Rock, Hogan, Austin,
HBK, Bret Hart and even Angle.

Why? He was not as versatile as HBK, Austin, Bret Hart or Angle nor the
industry trancsending/transforming appeal of Hogan, Austin or Rock.

I'd put him in a 2nd tier group that includes Foley and the Undertaker.

This might be a candidate for most ridiculous post on RSPW ever.

C The Shocker brings his needed voice of reason to another thread.

Ric Flair overrated? Anybody who thinks that is retarded. Plain and simple.

And as for the second tier...

The Undertaker? The fucking UNDERTAKER? Were you high when you posted
this? C'mon, admit it - you're in the company of friends here...

UT has never been given the chance to draw on his own. He gets a huge
pop live, mainly for his OTT ring entrances. He's a very mediocre worker
who occasionally gets inferiority complexes about it and busts out
something to get people talking (Hell in a Cell, no-hands plancha at
Ground Zero in 1997, occasional forays into UWFI-style mat wrestling).

Conclusion: The Undertaker is, was, and always will be, "Special
Attraction" status. Wheel him out for a cheap pop and have him roll over
a 300lb stiff, and then it's time for the main event.

Foley. Ehhhh. Pioneered hardcore in the US, largely because his career
was going nowhere as a WCW midcarder so he sidestepped into Garbage
wrestling in Japan and re-invented Cactus Jack. Directly inspired a
thousand terrible indy guys hacking at themselves with razor blades in
front of crowds of 30 people. Not Mick's fault, and for a guy in such
terrible physical condition he could brawl with the best of them, work
smart matches and cut a fantastic promo. But still, ehhhh.

I like how you're missing anyone who hasn't wrestled in the last ten
years, too.

I couldn't even begin to put together a list of *all time* because I
haven't seen a ton of guys from the seventies and earlier, but I'll take
a shot at it. US only, to avoid "you're biased in favor of puro"
accusations.

1. Ric Flair
2. Steve Austin
3. Hulk Hogan
4. HBK
5. The Rock
6. Bret Hart
7. Harley Race
8. Terry Funk
9. Mick Foley
10. Stan Hansen

I know Hansen might seem an odd pick but I just fucking *love* him in
the ring. JBL + Vader + ultra-stiff = golden.

This may be the second-most ridiculous post in RSPW history.

The post that started this thread is already #1.

 A clarification.

I am NOT saying he sucks. Not at all.

What I am saying, is that for someone often considered the Greatest of
All Time, he gets outshone by others - i.e. the people whose names I
mentioned.

I've seen Vinny's argument. Come on, C. Why do YOU think Flair is
better than HBK, Angle, Austin, Rock, Hitman or Hogan?

Perhaps I may consider removing Rock from that group now that I think
about it, but I think his crossover appeal was better and *I* marked
for him more than I did Flair (granted I haven't seen much Flair pre
1995).

And please remember not to judge Flairs best vs. Austins worst, i.e. if
you're going to base your argument against Austin on his GM days, then
you have to keep in mind Flair has become nothing but a HHH Yes Man.

<< Greatest Pro Wrestler Of All Time has *nothing* to do with
"mainstream crossover ability", and *everything* to do with who is the
best fucking wrestler. >>

So if we change this thread to greatest modern era wrestler of all all
time (without qualifications) would you argue that Benoit is better
than a Rock or Austin?

<<I think Angle is probably worker of the decade - but there's not a
whole lot of competition. I'd swear by quite a few guys over him "of
all time" though.>>

I've only really seriously watched wrestling since WM 7. And I only
started watching WCW when the NWO angle started, hence my 'modern era'
bias.

Undertaker and Foley, however washed up they are now, wowed and
entertained crowds and they were draws.

Undertaker especially, if you take into consideration he came at a time
when there was still somewhat of a "is wrestling real?" deal.

Flair is better than both though, and I'll concede Rock too.

Not yet convinced that he's better than Hogan, Angle, HBK, Austin or
Hart though.

You're judging Flair at his worst though - you just admitted you haven't
seen much Flair post 1995. Compare 1995 Flair to 2003 Austin and Flair
wins. Compare 1980s Flair to 1997 Austin... and Flair still wins.

Benoit's body of work is consistently better than Austin's, but he's
nothing like as relevant as either of them.

I guess draw etc. has to factor into it somewhere - I'd just rather that
at least 90% of the title of "best wrestler" be down to ability as a
wrestler - which includes mic work.

Best ring work: Benoit, Austin, Rock.
Best mic work: Austin, Rock, Benoit.
Biggest draw: Austin, Rock, Benoit.

Then I have to give it to Austin.

Despite his out-of-ring behaviours tarnishing his accomplishments, Shawn is
HoF material. He's just not even close to a "GOAT" consideration.
