Will Beckhamania run wild in the U.S.A.?

Ben Robert Smith 1 June 2005 05:58:43
The man is an uber-celebrity throughout the world. It only stands to reason
that the U.S. will fall in love with him too.

Ben Smith

He's going to be back in Europe in 6 months bawling his freaking eyes out
because of how little respect he's going to get over here.

"Beckham? You mean like in the soccer movie with the Indian chick? Meh."

Well, you know better on that account. Fruity little guys who play
kickball don't get a lot of press over here, even if he IS married to a
Spice girl. Most people over here don't know who Mia Hamm is, but at
least they'd recognize the name.

Nope, most American's don't care about soccer.

Adu > Beckham

When he retired, the sport's popularity disappeared like> someone used the Ultimate Nullifier on it.

Despite this post being about football, I can't help but mark for this
reference.

Very true. MLS is merely a trifle in the global scope of footballing.

Who's America's best international? DeMarcus Beasley of PSV Eindhoven?

Ben Smith

Six months? More like two. Pre-season training in Madrid will be on by
mid-July. This is the annual summer 2-week charm offensive to try and
push The Beckham Brand, no doubt driven by his many corporate sponsors
(Adidas, Pepsi, Gillette, Police Sunglasses, Vodafone...) to get the
hundreds of millions of dollars they've paid him to sell their products
to start paying off in the last market where he's not a recognisable face.

I agree here. Heck, the fact that he married a Spice Girl didn't raise
his popularity here one iota.

And he knows he's playing in front of a crowd of strangers, at least
against USA.

I thought it was more of a "play a handful of teams in the break
before the end of World Cup qualifying, and see what newbies might
just be ready to play if they make it to Germany next year" sort of
thing, as opposed to trying to push Beckham - everybody who wants to
know who he is over here already does. (I wouldn't be a bit surprised
if more people in the USA recognize Freddy Adu than David Beckham.)
