| Pete Cresswell - Phone Call From Somebody In 201 Area? Guest 04:17:00 |
| | Yeah.... sounds OT.... but I lost a brand new Ezzy Wave 6.9 couple weeks back....
Anybody try to phone me today?
Got a mystery message on my answering machine from somebody in the 201 area - but it was garbled and I couldn't make out the callback number.
After I deleted it a little voice whispered "Yer gonna be sorrrrry....". -- PeteCresswell

| Corpus Quiver Steve Elliott 19:49:07 |
| | I posted this question on iWindsurf and did not get any serious replies, so maybe someone here could help:
Hi, what's a good quiver for Corpus area? My son starts at Texas A&M in Corpus Christi next fall and I'd like to get a board for him. He has a Tabou 3S 87, weighs 170 pounds, sails freestyle and is used to sailing in the San Francisco area. I suppose he will sail in the bay, adjacent to the campus, or at Bird Island.
Also, any local info, sites, connections, etc... would be appreciated.

| | When visiting my son I have seen people flying at Liberty Park. I have flown there, too. That is pretty close to NYC.

Hi All, Have searched for information regarding where to fly a stunt kite in NYC, finding nothing that dates later than about the year 2000, when there seemed to be a lot of problems with certain areas getting shut down. Wondering if anyone has any (current) suggestions of good places to fly stunt kites in the city, preferably subway accessible. Thanks in advance. |

Hmm another thing I'm concerned about right now is ear pain. My ears block themselves pretty easilly (I can feel it if I ski down a hill at 40+ mph or when an airplane lands normally) and I believe they are more sensible than average as my sinus are known to be pretty thin (my dad has the same thing) and therefore can be easily congested. Is this something I should worry about? Any tips on avoiding ear pain? You should be concerned about this - at least to the point of being proactive to prevent damage and hearing loss. I had the same issue when I made my first few jumps and every now and then I'll get under canopy and have to clear my ears. The sinuses were fine on those first few but I definitely felt the pressure which went away as soon as I cleared my ears. To this day, I will ~not~ jump if I got congestion going on and can't clear my ears. I've seen too many friends in skydiving have to deal with serious and painfull ear issues like perforated eardrums, gushing nosebleeds - no fun. So, decongestants (non-drowsy) are a good idea if you're the slightest bit congested and a good rule of thumb is, if you can't clear your ears on the ground - like, you can't hold your nose and lips closed blow out, work your jaw, and pop your ears, then don't jump. The risk is a perforated ear drum and subsequent hearing loss if you do - also seems pretty painfull. If I can pop my ears just by working my jaw, I'm definitely good to go. If I can pop the ears by that plus holding the nose and lips closed, blowing out, still good but be aware on how the ears/sinuses feel going up and getting back down. And again, if I can't clear an ear, tough luck - I'll stay on the ground. Chewing gum and forcing yawns can be helpfull. The thing to remember is you probably won't notice any significant discomfort actually while in freefall - at least not in the beginning since you'll be mightily distracted by the mix of hypoxia and adrenaline but you could realize some discomfort once your canopy is open. First, do what your JM's tell you to do and if that means dealing with discomfort until you get to the ground where you can clear your ears without taking your eyes off the ball, it's a good tradeoff. Over time I'm sure you'll get to the point to where you open your canopy, do the things you're supposed to do first (ask your jumpmasters about that), and clear your ears without even thinking about it. But, for now - as far as your ears and sinuses are concerned, keep focused on whether you can clear them on the ground or not - might save you some pain and from some hearing loss in the future.

| Rec.kites Coming to an end Troy Gunn 20:42:30 |
| | Has it finally come to a point where our once beloved kiters communications outlet "Rec.kites" ceases to exist? At this posting, there were only 2 other remaining post.
Let's not let Rec.kites die. I know there are lot's of other kite related forums, yahoo groups, blogs, etc.. out there, but there's really not much reason why rec.kites couldn't make a come back, and be a place where all kite flyers world wide could come to one location to talk about kites. I'd even welcome the lively dysfunctional discussions between Mr. Nasty, Roger Maddy, or Andrew Beattie just to preserve this piece of kiting culture! LOL
Most of you that have been around kiting for more than 7-8 years remember when this was one of the only ways we as kiters had to communicate with each other on a international level. Perhaps we as kiters have become somewhat separated from each other, because there are too many kite related forums to choose from now-a-days?
I miss the days when Rec.kites was the place to hang out and discuss whatever was on our minds kite related or not! You knew that every kite flyer in the world that had access to a PC was posting in here or lurking everyday.

| Fuel Problem '97 GSI A12vman 14:18:40 |
| | I had my '97 GSI out last weekend for the first time this year. It ran great for about 15 Minutes, but then I couldn't get it over 1/2 Throttle (about 4500 RPM on the Tach) without it bogging down. I ran it slow back to the ramp & pulled it out of the water, no problem as long as I didn't try to go over 1/2 throttle. Seems like it could be a fuel problem. I always leave under 1/4 tank at the end of the season, add stabilizer, then top it off with fresh fuel in the spring as well as replace the spark plugs.. I checked the spinoff fuel filter, it had a few particles in it but nothing major. Are there any other filters along the way or should I go after the Carb next? My GSI has a total of 114 Hours on it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance, -a12vman

Yes, it's a "into the looks" crowd. Matching bikinis, full of tattoos (sometimes with typos in them), I also find it's a crowd that has more smoking - the "in" crowd. Whatever, no biggie again. Yeah, whatever the dynamic is in windsurfing that brings out the minimalist, cheap b*st*rd side of even big spenders has a counter in kiting that seems to manifest itself in conspicuous consumption, perfectly defined by smoking - something of no value done to show you can afford it - burning $$.
Certainly a better target market for retailers.

| Re: What are you using for Downhaul line? VikingSail 19:02:48 |
| | This is not what you want to hear but if you're using 3.8 mm spectra lines such as Marlowe formuline or the white spectra line that Avon Sail House sells, you need to stay away from the older model chinook extensions and use the newer models with the narrower camcleats. this solves the slippage problem. I have extension lines that have seen at least 3 seasons of use. (Now retired as a backup line in my harness pocket.) I have yet to break a spectra line.

| Which GPS for windsurfing Jesper Kaas 20:04:38 |
| | I finally managed to kill my Garmin Foretrex 201 GPS. That was done by putting it in soap-water ( to wash the wrist strap). The display is now 3/4 filled with water, so I think it is over and out.
If it wasn't for the problem with water getting in, I would by another Foretrex. My unit started having problems caused by water inside after about a year (now is the third season). A good drying in a warm place usually fixed it in a day or two.
Are there any alternatives to the Foretrex 201 that don't have leaking problems, and that can 1) communicate with a PC, 2) be worn on the wrist?
Thanks for any input. -- Jesper Kaas jesperk@nei.takk.online.no

Funny that another post on recycling shows up here at the same time. I'm wondering about Carbon Recycling. IE, that busted Mast top or 2, ( or 6) thats in your garage. or, your carbon boom arm that snapped in 2 anyone know of a manu thats recycling the carbon? is it possible or economical? seems with the price of carbon shooting up a recycling plan would make sense. I have that top half of a 490 and a 520, both 80% or greater. Dave We've recycled them into wind chimes (using old fins as the sail to ring them) and awning poles.

| Re: Roof rack options Jsntg 17:01:58 |
| | Load ratings are conservative by a factor of 4.5. This number usually correlates exactly with the number of attorneys advising the manufacturer.
I've had 5 boards and a preggo quiver bag on my Thules > 200+ pounds. No prob.
That said I had one board on the same racks going 50 over a bridge in a 70 mph gust and off they came. F=MA
So limiting reagent is connection to roof.
Completely scientific field test: With nothing on the racks, stand on roof, grab and jerk. See if you can rip them off. Try multiple times. Get wifey to help. If the two of youz can't rip them off, you're prolly good.

We just got rid of our mini van for a 2004 Ford Explorer. Since we don't have the captains seats in the middle row (floor room up the middle), I'm forced to put all my gear on the roof when taking long trips with the family. My question is, how accurate are the listed weight ratings for Thule and Yakima racks? The rack I'm looking at mounts to the factory rack. The weight rating is about ~50 lbs per bar. All my gear together weighs ~100 lbs. Should this be a concern on a long trip? I see lots of other cars with loads that appear to weigh much more then 100 lbs. CTM

| Re: Which wetsuit in LA, this week? (+ where's the wind??) Alan White 08:06:35 |
| | I've sailed a few times right up the coast at Santa Barbara and Jalama, and I can tell you the long-sleeve/short-sleeved issue is one of a personal preference. Part of that depends on how thick the rest of the wetsuit is too. FWIW, I sail a short-sleeved with a light fleece hood attached to long sleeves under my short-sleeved wetsuit. If it's a sunny and warm day, I'm sure you could get away with a short sleeved 4/3 wetsuit. Just my opinion, and I'm sure that's why you haven't had more response. You'll see everything from shorties to 5/3 semi dry.
