Speed checks

WillV 26 May 2005 20:12:00
 Here's another topic:

The other day The Dog mentioned that he had clocked 36MPH on a twin-fin MADD
135 (pretty darn good IMO) - what other "free-ride" combos are clocking good
speeds these dayz???

I'm going to try out the MADD 165 today and the CROSS 117 and post back -
it's a flat-water sailing day today - thermals around 18MPH....probably rig
the 7.4 Aerotech Phantom (and maybe the 6.8) for some testing with Wardog -
I believe he's got an S-Type he's ready to fire-up...

I recently saw an article on speed sailing - so it's apparently a "hot
topic" worldwide....what speeds are us Americans doing here in our neck of
the woods??

 WillV,

great topic, I love to see how fast I can go, (though I'm really not going
that fast.)

I guess it wouldn't really classify as a straight freeride board, but I
have an older f155 that I sail with a 9.5 retro and a 7.5 v8
I can usually hit 25 mph with the 9.5 in about 13-15 mph of wind, and I
switch to the 7.5 anything above that, usually I hit about 27-29 mph on the
7.5 in 16-20 mph of wind.
I did use a 6.5 retro on the same board and hit 30 once, but, had no idea
what windspeed was, would guess about 22 + mph

I use an etrex legend attached to my shoulders, and just go by the Max speed
on the display when I get back in.
I'll be curious to see what speeds you get with the madd and cross.
Wardog, also really curious about the s-type in that kinda wind. (is it
the larger 126 or??)

Dave

 33mph on a start?? DUDE!

Nice run, what were conditions like?
I can only get my wife's start to about 25 or so.
course, you have @15 + cm advantage in the fin dept.

 WillV,

in confused chop I can't even get up to 22 mph,
I posted about that in the pwc chop thread a bit ago.
I can imagine that it would be uncomfortably "bouncy"
Flat water I'm sure will bring those numbers a waaaay up.
and your knee's will still co-operate with you when your done your session.
keep us posted.

Very cool Dave - I finally got a chance to check my speeds on a couple of
runs last week, in 4.7/5.0 conditions - I was OP'd and found that the slower
speeds of around 20-22MPH were about as fast as I felt comfortable in very
thick, steep chop on my CROSS 117. We'll see what flat-water brings...

mountain view sounds really cool, I know what your talking about with
chasing gusts.
the worst part is if you plane up quick, you can often run away from a gust
before it has a chance to really fill in, and then you have to wait for it
again.
I get the same kind of conditions here in the 12 -16 range, but am missing
the snowcapped mountains, I do have a fairly nice dow chemical plant to
stare at. the pollution / exhaust coming from the stacks makes for a great
wind - meter.

 A related thread:

We were trying to get a decent sail in slam n' slog conditions in the
eastern gorge last weekend. The flukey wind, current and location made for
excessively choppy water and frustrating conditions. I sail mainly
wave/bump gear and typically don't go for straightline speed, but usually
can keep up to most of the folks on the water.

We sailed a bit and then packed it in. Just as we were getting ready to
leave, I noticed a sailor go screaming past the launch, looking like he was
easily going twice as fast as anyone else. We strolled down the to water to
check it out.

Turns out Bruce Peterson and Dale Cook had shown up to sail. They appeared
to be on really small, narrow boards and big Retros (or some similar slalom
style sail). Perhaps they were testing, a they spent a lot of time looking
at sail trim. Maybe they were just bored ?

Anyways, to watch these guys smoke across the water, you'd swear they were
on a flat speed course and everybody else was dragging anchors. Almost
perfect trim all the time, lower bodies working, head and shoulders steady.
They would change their angle of attack each reach, and still seemd to hold
speed like a broad reach. Every now and then they'd pop a jump - just
clearing the water and keeping airborn for a long time. The control was
amazing.

Just glad I had aleady packed up. It sucks to be a jibe buoy...

 I got a top speed of 36.6 mph on a f2 air 265 with a 5.7 wave sail. The
average over 500m was 35.4 mph. With a 7.5 freeride sail on the same board I
got 36 mph. Both speeds were set on very flat water.

Speed sailing is on the rise, using gps everybody can improve his own speed.

 Wardog,
you hit 31 in 17mph of wind?? fantastic!
how large or small of a sail would you consider running on that s-type?
or maybe this is a better question, in flat water how much wind would you
sail in with that board before jumping down to a smaller board?

I'm gonna find out!!! I suspect that this is max sail size...as far as how much wind I would > take the board into with flat water...as much wind as the lake can throw > at me...after sailing it in onshore 5.0m2 conditions in head high > chop/swell...the lake is a piece of cake...>

If you've been out on the BIG pond with it, sounds great then for the small
chop that I might encounter.
you'd say that 7.5 or 8 is the top end that this board would comfortably
sail. so, for me at 185 on a 7.5 I could probably expect to use this board
starting at around 15 mph of wind, and working on up to those 5.0 head high
sweals.. :)
for some this might be a good single board "quiver".

Thanks

Dave

We'll see what flat-water brings...>>>
It brought me the title of the "King of zee lake" today...;-)>>>I wuz zee fastest on zee lake when I hit a 31 MPH, wind was averaging >>>16-17 MPH at the time...kinda marginal day and a not very conducive wind >>>direction for speed...can't wait for a typical smokin' day...>>>http://surfingsports.com/images/lopez_today.jpg>>>

WillV,>>>>>
great topic, I love to see how fast I can go, (though I'm really not >>>>>going that fast.)>>>>>
I guess it wouldn't really classify as a straight freeride board, but >>>>>I have an older f155 that I sail with a 9.5 retro and a 7.5 v8>>>>>I can usually hit 25 mph with the 9.5 in about 13-15 mph of wind, and >>>>>I switch to the 7.5 anything above that, usually I hit about 27-29 mph >>>>>on the 7.5 in 16-20 mph of wind.>>>>>I did use a 6.5 retro on the same board and hit 30 once, but, had no >>>>>idea what windspeed was, would guess about 22 + mph>>>>>
I use an etrex legend attached to my shoulders, and just go by the Max >>>>>speed on the display when I get back in.>>>>>I'll be curious to see what speeds you get with the madd and cross.>>>>>Wardog, also really curious about the s-type in that kinda wind. (is it >>>>>the larger 126 or??)>>>>>

Here's another topic:>>>>>>
The other day The Dog mentioned that he had clocked 36MPH on a >>>>>>twin-fin MADD 135 (pretty darn good IMO) - what other "free-ride" >>>>>>combos are clocking good speeds these dayz???>>>>>>
I'm going to try out the MADD 165 today and the CROSS 117 and post >>>>>>back - it's a flat-water sailing day today - thermals around >>>>>>18MPH....probably rig the 7.4 Aerotech Phantom (and maybe the 6.8) for >>>>>>some testing with Wardog - I believe he's got an S-Type he's ready to >>>>>>fire-up...>>>>>>
I recently saw an article on speed sailing - so it's apparently a "hot >>>>>>topic" worldwide....what speeds are us Americans doing here in our >>>>>>neck of the woods??>>>>>>
