Re: large sail size on a seatrend AVS

Jeff & Barb 30 April 2005 18:51:34
I sailed a Seatrend AVS 70 for five years and while it is not the same
board there are probably many similarities. For the 70, Seatrend recommended
sail sizes from 6.5 to 9.0. Working under the "bigger is better" theory, I
sailed with a 9.5 for the past two seasons. The AVS is a fast board to begin
with and with an oversize sail it is scary fast.
After getting over the white knuckles I wouldn't even consider going
bigger than a 9.5 because the board can be difficult to manage at the upper
end of the wind range for the sail. The AVS wants a big fin to begin with
and a big sail wants a really big fin. With the AVS a fin big enough to
prevent spin out will make the board want to rail up when really well
powered. Beside having the footstraps in the outboard position, I would ride
with upward pressure on the windward footstraps to the point that I
eventually broke one of the inserts.
But I had some really fast, fun rides on that board! If you go larger
than Seatrend recommends I don't think weight is an issue; I think
manageability becomes the problem. An 8.5 is probably doable; a 9.5 might be
an unruly beast.
If you jump from a 7.5 to 9.5, you're probably looking at a mast and
boom also. If you can, do a demo so you know what you're getting into.
What ever you do - enjoy the speed!

Don't know about this particular board - but I don't think the weight is the
issue. I think the problem will be center of effort and fin size. A 9.5 M
sail is going to need lots more fin and it will be tricky to sail.

That said - I routinely sail my 8.0 M retro on a Pro-Tech ATC 270 which is
essentially a 100 L B&J type board. I use it with a 14 inch swept pointer.
(But I think the 8.0 M Retro sails like a normal 7.5 M sail.)

Would a 9.5 be too large for this board? What are the issues with using> larger than recommended sails? Too heavy?>
I often _almost_ get planing with my 7.5 (North Pyro), so hopefully a> 9.0 or larger will get me going. Or will the increased weight of the> rig offset the larger sail size?>
