The latest gear is supposed to work in a wide range of conditions, so why do
so many people seem to need vans, trailers, boxes etc. to haul their gear
around?

Seems to me that either the equipment range is narrower than advertised, or
some people are just gearheads.

Still, I wouldn't mind having a full sized van so I'd be able to get out of
the wind to change into/out of my wetsuit.

My Toyota Celica can contain enough gear to cover 98% of all my
sailing. One board (Hypersonic), three sails, three masts, two booms,
fins, suit, picnic basket and myself... The mid-sized sail is actually
not absolutely necessary, but it's "nice to have". Everything fits
inside the car and it's not a big car...

Interesting observation. I cycle through the gear "glut and drought" issue
every few years.

Used to live in a low wind area and visit a higher wind area. That required
gear for all conditions. Every now and then I'd pare things back for the
80/20 % rule (lower winds). Then I'd get a yen for higher wind sailing
again, and start accumulating.

So then we moved to an area with high winds. Cut things down to a minimum -
1 board and 4 sails. Then my wife decided she was going to start sailing,
so guess what ? ;-)

Personally I think you have to be part gear-geek and part masochist to get
into sailing anyways.
