Re: The old line through the sail trick

Rod: I posted some of that info on the Gaastra site. As others have
mentioned, the small hole in the sail is not very likely to contribute to a
loss of power or speed in a noticeable way. Another way to say this is that
the gain associated with reducing boom flex will overcome any loss of lift
or increased drag from such a small hole. Not just that, but your new setup
will pump much more powerfully, resulting in fewer pumps and a better ride
overall.

Just be sure to reinforce the area surrounding the hole.

Thanks Dan, Looks like I've got myself a weekend project.

Since I use the boom for other sails I plan to tie a loop in one end of
the line so that I can quickly loop it around one boom arm between the
harness line connection points and then run it through the hole to the
other side. Any idea of a good knot to fix the line to the other boom
arm, something I can pull tight and wont slip?

not to be a party pooper here,
but have you sailed the v8 in its present form and found it unmanageable?
I just replaced my crappy noodle boom with a Chinook triple clamp aluminum
boom and it is WAY better on my retro 9.5 than the old noodle. I'm sure
that a carbon boom would be another step up from that yet.
having said that, I only really had a terrible time with the noodle boom
when getting over powered on that sail. ( I jump down to a 7.5 next, so I
tended to stay on it too long) in < 15mph wind the noodle was just enough
to hold it all together still.

if you say your planning on using your v8 only for light wind planeing,
perhaps your boom in its current state will be enough to hold the rig
together until you decide its time for your 8.5.

regardless, if you don't trust your boom as it is now, why not get a new
boom that accommodates the 8.5 and 9.5 and possibly more?
if your like me, a putterer, the challenge of fitting a line thru your sail
is probably part of the main interest in performing such "surgery" but when
all is said and done you still have a large sail rigged on a floppy boom and
a short mast.
with a second boom your could rig both sails on the beach and switch them
out quickly depending on conditions.
plus in the "unlikely" ;) event that you later decide to replace that larger
sail with a newer sail your have the boom ready to go.

Dave

ps, the noodle was made from 3 different booms including the tail of a wave
boom that had a hinged end, the arms from an old tie on mistral boom and a
clamp head from another boom.

 Hi Dave

No, I didn't find the boom unmanageable. I am also a putterer and don't
mind the surgery :-).

The boom is a relatively new Naish 200-250 and actually very stiff for
an aluminium boom. I got it because I can use both my 7.0 and 8.5 and I
always had in mind to eventually get a 9.0 to replace the 8.5 but the
9.5 came up for sale cheaply so I went for it.

BTW the 490 is the recommended mast so the sail / mast combination is
100%.

I guess my main concern is that without surgery I'll wreck my perfectly
good boom, and you are right, the intention is to only use the 9.5 for
absolute minimum wind conditions. Trouble is that like the other day I
went out on it in light winds and was manageing to plane most of the
time but then the wind came up and I ended up being well powered most
of the session.

I could easily been on my 8.5 but the thought of derigging the 9.5 and
rigging the 8.5 was too much to bear, especially as my sessions are
often around an hour long.

Eventually I would like to get something like the carbon HPL 200-260
which would fit all three of my sails, so I guess I'm looking for a
temporary solution that will not ruin my boom in the meantime.

I have the option of a good used carbon boom to replace my alu, or
keeping the Naish alu and getting a larger jumbo alu for the 9.5, both
would cost about the same. Unfortunately a new carbon is wayyy out of
my current budget.

regards,

rod
