replacing shaft bearing

Andy 25 April 2005 07:04:03
I've got a '83 Ski Nautique that I think needs the shaft bearing replaced.

Last year I started getting a small vibration in the rear of the boat. I
had the prop reconditioned 2 years ago and it still looks new. I don't
recall hitting anything, so I don't think that's the problem.

I've had the boat for about 10 years and I've never replaced the shaft
bearing.

Am I on the right path? Is it hard to replace the bearing? Do I need any
special tools?

After replacing the bearing, do I need to have the shaft realigned?

Thanks,

Andy - Waiting out the snow in Michigan!

Do not overlook the possibility of a crack in your prop shaft. My
boat developed such a vibration which slowly got worse. It turned out
to be a fatigue failure in the shaft about 1 in. in front of the prop.
Luckily I found it before it let go at high RPM. If it is the strut
bearing (also called the cutlass bearing I think) you will need the
proper slide hammer to remove the shaft, then the bearing, and then to
install the new bearing. About $150 if you cannot find one to borrow.

It was pretty obvious when my strut bearing needed replacement -- I
could shake the shaft inside the strut with very little effort. I ended
up needing a new strut because the axle ate all of the way through the
bearing and was grinding away on the strut. Needed a new axle, too.
The vibration was very apparent when in reverse. The boat had about 550
hours, if I remember correctly.
