Which camera?

Sail-n-Dive 27 February 2005 08:51:41
I haven't bought a video camera for several years and I'm not up on the
latest "best buy". My current camera is a TRV20 that has a malfunctioning
zoom and I like to replace it with a smaller camera. I'm guessing that Sony
is still the most popular for skydiving. I'd appreciate suggestions that
can save me wasting time trying to guess what might work well. I'd also
like to be able to use my existing wide angle lens and filters.
TIA
Quinton

There is no latest "best buy" as far as I know. Sony vid camera
developement has gone kinda sideways of late with with bottom loaders
and clunkier, menu-driven functions.

Looking for smaller - go with the one chip "PC" types.

Okay - you need something with a 37mm ring for your wide angle and
filters.

As you know with the TRV20 - bottom loader - can be a pain but not
insurmountable if you're securing it in a box.

Looking for smaller - go with the one chip "PC" types - they're not
37mm - have to fork over for an adapter.

As for latest "best buy," if you're shooting skydiving primarily,
nothing wrong the the Dig8's but if you're aiming for broadcast
quality there's the Sony - DCR-HC1000 3chip

My mistake - accidentally sent off before I'd finished.

Meant to say, I think the PC types *are* 37mm - I dunno - don't have
one - drag a filter up to the dz or best buy and see if it'll fit.

Best buy out there? I'm convinced the next camera I get will be a
3chip from EBay.

We had a local jumper have his Sony digital fail after just one jump. It
seems that he failed to secure it with the tripod screw on his camera mount,
and went out the door with it attached just with the industrial "Velcro".
Still, you would think a product like a Sony would be good for at least two
jumps. :)

At our Dz we have about 8-10 Sony Pc 108's that are SECURED PROPERLY and
work no problems at all.

Through a deal with our dz owner and a nearby store we were able to purchase
them for $900 Australian.
Most of the guys and girls here in Oz use Sony more than any other brand!
