Kite project

Ricardo Cezar 22 February 2005 18:22:52
I´m looking to a kite project, so I can make my own kite. I don´t
know how to say it in english, but the kite I´m looking for is that
one we use two controls and look like an delta! In brazil we call it
"asa delta". Something like "delta wing", but I´m not sure.

Anyone know where I can find a project do help me build one kite like
this?

I recently built an Ariel Mini from plans on Stan's Toyshop
(http://members.tripod.com/stanley119/ariel80_plan.htm). This is a
very easy kite to build, with not too much sewing involved. I had to
make my own fittings by stripping the insulation off some screened
audio cable, which gave the right sort of size for 2mm spars. If you
pay attention to keeping the sail and bridle symetrical then it should
fly brilliantly, with a surprisingly wide repertoire of tricks.

As I could only get fibreglass rod to start with, I modified the
original plans slightly to add a removeable Velcro nose piece to allow
me to re-spar the kite with carbon at a later stage, which I have now
done. I also modified the centre fitting to allow it to swivel so
that the kite could be folded up.

Keep an eye on where the upper spreader is attached - my
interpretation of the plans put it much too low. It is not a
particularly critical position so just put it where it looks right.

The spar diameters are given in inches on Stan's site. I used 2mm
carbon for the leading edges, spine and lower spreader. 1.5mm carbon
for the upper spreader and 1mm carbon for the standoffs. I reckon
that it would be worth trying 1.5mm carbon for the leading edges in
very light winds or indoors but I don't have enough of it to try this
at present.

Don't cut the spars to the lengths given on the site until you have
checked that they are correct for your interpretation of the sail
plan!
