Re: Kawasaki 650, no top end JBDragon 08:04:47
There's not many people around here these days, you may want to try
someplace like http://www.pwcforum.com/ for some help!

OK it's a 1990 TS, stop laughing, I have a few questions.
First off I'll say that it ran this last 2 summers, but not very
great.
It's missing its top end. With it out of the water it will start to
miss before it over revs. (I'm going by how it sounds now and before)
Also I used to let off the throttle when getting some air so it
wouldn't
rev too high, but now that isn't a problem, it doesn't over rev. It
seems to be at top speed at around 3/4 throttle, giving it more
throttle just changes the sound but not the speed.
Also ever since it was new it took a little warm up period (30
seconds?) at
half to full throttle until it would stop missing and be able to get
up
and plane easily. Then the low end is fine until it gets cold again.
The carb has been rebuilt and adjusted per factory specs then
attempted
to fine tune it, no help.
The compression is 160 psi cold and 140 psi warm, even across both
cylinders. Everyone keeps telling me this is fine, but the specs list
178 psi. That's a long way off! I even see supposed rebuilt engines
that said the compression was only 150. Maybe they aren't broken in
yet???? I don't know, I'm lost. If the book says 178 psi, how is 140
or 150 good?
I bought 2 "good" used reed valves. Well they were supposed to be
good. I don't know 2 cycles so this is new to me. The supposed good
used valves are slightly open all the time. It's
easy to see just looking at it. Both the smaller valves and the
larger
valves aren't sealed unless I apply light pressure, then they seem to
close fine. Flipping them over doesn't seem to help much. These
aren't metal,
they are the type that look like thin fiberglass.
The spark seems to be the same for both cylinders and it doesn't vary
when hot or cold.
Would good reed valves make a noticeable difference in compression?
This also sat 2 years outside without being fogged so I'm guessing
honing and new rings may help a lot? Can I just hone and install new
rings in the old pistons? (I guess I have to open it up first but
what do I look for?) Where do I get new rings?
Appreciate any help,
Tony

Re: Windsurfing Vans Wtrplnet 02:49:14

I'm thinking about finally giving in and getting a dedicated van for
windsurfing. I'm tired of trying to figure out which boards to take
which days (I only carry 2 easily on my car) and I have 4 to choose
from. So I'm thinking about selling my motorcycle and getting a
second vehicle for windsurfing (and maybe a few other things).
So my question is out to those of you who have or have had a cargo van
for windsurfing. Any preferences as to Ford, GMC, Chev, or Dodge?
What length masts and boards can you fit inside? My longest gear is a
2 piece 260 mast and a 273 board which I want to fit inside. What
kind of mileage do you get (City and Highway)? How does the V6 do in
power or is a V8 needed?
I'm looking at 2001 Chev 1500 express vans. These have V6's.
Thanks for your help.
John

I've had three Ford Econoline vans, the most recent being a 1992 that I
bought new and just recently sold. You can fit pretty much any windsurfing
gear (and lots of it) in a cargo van. You can even carry old style long
boards if you don't mind them encroaching on the drivers area a bit. Of
course this means only two seats but the variations and configurations are
endless.

As far as which one to buy, personal preference would dictate but if you
look at the major fleet buyers almost all of them opt for the Ford. There
must be a reason for that. My first two vans (1978 and 1982) had lots of
problems but the newer one was pretty much trouble free for the 150,000
miles I had it.

That van had the 302 five liter and got about 13 around town to 18 on the
highway. I'd say average about 15. Not great but not all that bad either.
My first one had a 460 and I probably never got better than 14 on the
highway and around 10 in town, but that was very old technology. I always
felt the six just didn't have the grunt to use in California where mountain
driving is always a possiblity. In my mind a more lightly stressed larger
engine is always preferred to a smaller engine that's working harder to keep
up. If I lived in the plains I'd probably go for the six. "Performance"
isn't really a relative term in vans of this type anyway. I don't know
about real-world mileage but I'd guess the six isn't that much better, but I
could be wrong on that.

Vans are great for windsurf gear, and if you're like me you'll end up
driving the van most of the time just to make sure you have your gear when
you need it.

First session in >2 years! Cliff Frost 18:08:53
 Yeehaa!!!

Well it took a lot longer than I had wanted, but I finally got out on
the water for the first time since Fall of 2005!

Got out at Crissy Field around 3:30 on a 5.2 in a heavy flood tide. Started
at Anita Rock, couldn't get planing, and ended up at the SF Yacht Club.

Carried it all back, rigged a 5.8 and it was perfect. Wind was a little
gusty, but there was plenty in the holes to keep on a plane. And the closer
to the Golden Gate bridge the heavier the wind. My final reach was deep
downwind as I'd worked my way far upwind--that was crazy fast (or so it
seemed after 2.5 years away).

I had no idea how hard or easy it would be after such a long layoff. It
turned out not hard at all. I even stayed dry on two gybes (one on each
tack)!

Aside from the false start on the sail size I forgot to put on gloves and
my hands are now sore. And I forgot to put a towel in the van. Fortunately
it doesn't take long to get blown dry. ;-)

Now we'll see how sore I am in the morning, and where!

Cheers,
Cliff

ps The long layoff was 'cuz I had back surgery in Oct 2006 and didn't work
the rehab hard enough to get out in 2007.

Problems w/Chinook Triple Clamp Carbon Formula Boom. Anyone else? Windinmysails 07:14:45
I bought a Chinook Triple Clamp Carbon Fiber Formula boom a couple years
ago. "Expensive" I thought but worth it. My opinion may be changing.
I've broken the head and three boom arms. In Chinook's defense, they
did replace the head and two of the arms under warranty. But now that
the third arm just broke, I'm becoming increasingly hesitant to venture
out with it again.

My weight is approximately 190 lbs, and last Sunday I rigged an 11 sq
meter Retro. The wind had built to the point where I probably could have
sailed my 9.5 or even 8 but it was on the Niagara River, which sometimes
can be gusty, so I rigged for the lulls. Mildly overpowered, heading out
on a reach......SNAP!!!. Turned around & sailed the good side back in.
40 degree F air, 32 degree F water. Each time that the boom has broken,
it has been in colder temperatures.

Is this normal? Is this a design flaw of Chinook Carbon Formula Booms?
Their website says "The stuff you can trust". I'm no longer so sure.
The description for their Carbon Booms says "Very stiff strong and
dependable". I'm not so sure.

For the price of the Carbon Formula, I could buy FOUR Aluminum Formula
booms. I was told the Carbon was far stronger, stiffer, lighter, and
would lock the draft better in a large sail. After this experience, I
may have to rethink this and take my chances with Aluminum and it may
not be Chinook, even though my booms in the past were Chinook.

What are your experiences? Are other Carbon Booms as fragile? I thought
far better and stronger Formula sailors regularly sailed overpowered
on Carbon booms with no ill effects. What do you think?

Thanks for any feedback from other windsurfers.

Craig.

Well, you're reasoning and comprehension are remarkably infantile -
which isn't a fair thing to say about infants I recognize but for that

Yes, it's possible <http://www.sfba.org/jpraffle.shtml> with the San

riders to be involved with, so I jumped at the opportunity to participate
when approached."

Re: just a test Brian Sangeorzan 07:29:57
 Hey Marc,
I know this is scary, but I was just thinking of you. Getting a new van and
was thinking that I saw rhino liner (or similar) sprayed on the floor of
your sprinter. Was that the product? How do you like it? Any residual
odors inside the van/

Free Flyers! Anyone could/would help please... TheFlyingGoulash 03:22:37
 Hi,

About five years ago I did a couple of jumps in lotus, just for the fun of
it...

This summer, ours here "down under", I started to play with it again, yet
I seem to be stuck.

Finally I have had a couple of video taken, one was good enough to put it
together as a clip.(I hope was good enough)

Could I get some feedback/suggestion on what is wrong, please.

Cheers,

TFG.
