Ok, being a new NHL fan, and reading all the different articles about what is going on, I realized that I need a little clarification on this whole strike buisness. (By the way, is it a "strike" or a "lockout?") Pretty much at this point, I feel like all I'm hearing are peoples opinions on the whole subject matter, but if any of you are experts, could you please provide me with one last opinion to this whole ordeal? What I want to know is: 1. When do you think this strike will end so that I (along with everyone else) can watch some games?!?!?!?! 2. HOW do you think it will end? Replacement players, agreement between NHL and NHLPA?

60 game season opens with replacement players in the Fall. NHLPA takes the NHL to court. Just before a ruling, and just before Christmas a deal is signed with the NHLPA. The last 40 games will be played with NHL players starting mid- January.
The bitterness and resentment will last a long time.

You forgot to answer the strike/lockout question. It is a lockout.
Otherwise the above scenario is probably a best guess - if Bettmann keeps his job. He can be fired, in which case the agreement he's cobbled together among the owners would unravel rather quickly. In particular, the eight-team veto of any agreement may be discarded. And that scenario has to be considered as one possibility among many.

Ok, I get the scenario, but I'm still unclear on the whole "Lockout" thing. Are you saying that because a lockout is when management tells employees on the verge of a strike not to come to work until a contract is in place, that because a contract remains up in the air, that this would qualify as a lockout? What does Bettmann keeping his job have to do with this, and what did you mean when you said that the eight team veto of an agreement could be discarded? Is it because that agreement would be voided with a new Commissioner in place should Bettmann loose his job? Thanks guys for your help! This whole thing is so confusing! Annette

The owners didn't want to assume any legal obligations to the players, and that is exactly what they had to do before training camp could begin under the expiring collective bargaining agreement. So rather than sign any agreement, they locked out the players before training camp began.
When the NHL renewed Bettmann's contract as commissioner of the NHL, one of the terms of that contract was that eight owners could veto any collective bargaining agreement negotiated by the NHL owners' bargaining committee. So the bargaining committee has to negotiate a CBA that is acceptable to twenty-three teams or more. In order to nullify that veto, Bettmann has to be removed as commissioner. It is highly unlikely at this point that whatever majority of owners is necessary to fire Bettmann would ever be achieved. Unlikely, but not impossible.
The players were far from a strike, why would they want to renegociate a deal when they know they'll get less in a new one. This is really a lockout, nothing else.

2. A dollor amount for each goal> ect,,,
The problem with that is that hockey is a team game. If you start loading contracts with Goal and Assist bonuses, where is the motivation to take a hit to allow a teammate to make a play? What's in it for the guy who battles in the corner and comes up with the puck? What about the shot blocker? The checker? Sure, you can add stats for all of these, but if you think the shots on goal stat is subjective (and watch the range of shots on goal from building to building) wait until you see the "digs puck in corner" stat, or the "takes a hit to make a play" stat.
I agree more performance based payment is necessary, but the answer to that more likely lies in the removal of the 110% qualifying offer than anywhere else. Shorter contracts with a fixed, 2 way arbitration would do wonders for tying performance to payment.
