Rescue Clubs

Chris 22 May 2005 18:34:26
 Hi

I have just won a Taylor Made Rescue Mid 5 25 degress with regular flex in a
tournament. I was aware of these clubs and was going to investigate them
but now I have one. I think it is probably a good club for me as I play off
14, hit the driver well and chip and putt OK. It's the mid/long irons in
the middle that cause me problems. I can change this club if I want but it
sounds like a good solution to my current weak area.

Has anyone switched from mid/long irons to a rescue and what are your
comments?

Regards

Chris

I play Hogan CFT 3 and 4 as replacements for my 3 and 4 iron. The long
iron shots have definitely gotten easier. I do have trouble trying to
play knock down shots though. A little more practice and that too will
come.

Another "best thing sliced bread" award...great club. Accurate and
forgiving. Now those pesky 175-180 yard par threes are manageable

I would think a 18 or 21 would fit your game better, if you can swap it.

I assembled 4 hybrids 15, 18, 21, 24 degrees.

They all hitter straighter and higher than the irons (X-16 Callaways) I get
more roll from the 2 and 3 irons therefore a bit more distance.
If I am at a narrow layout, I will put the 15 in for driving. On open
courses, I might put the 18 and 21 in and take out the 2I and 3I.

Rescue vs. long irons vs. fairway woods is really just more marketing
hype so you can think you are fooling she who must be obeyed. No way
could you justify another set of irons or fairway woods, but rescue
clubs are a whole different breed of cat. Sure!!

Modern metal woods and rescue clubs are nothing but irons with the
weight forward and down and fancy light weight covers like tailfins for
golfers glued on the back. It isn't what it looks, but how it plays -
loft, shaft, offset, etc. etc.

 Good advice I think

My home course is relatively short so a good drive - 7 wood combination will
normally get me up on the longer par 4's. However, if I duff the drive then
I will need distance with the rescue club. I am not overkeen on my 3 or 5
woods so I think a rescue of 16-18 degrees may be my best option. That
seems to be equivalent to a 4 wood according to a table I have just found.

Cheers

Chris

I carried a two iron for years and switched it for a TM Rescue Mid 2;> best decision I've ever made for my long game. It hits great from the> fairway, rough, tee box, etc.>

I have the exact same club (TM Rescue 5 Mid 25*), and it's the most
reliable long club in my bag.

I got it to replace my 5 iron, 165 yards,...but now it's playing like a
4 iron (175 yards), so I had to put the 5 iron back in. I'm temporarily
carrying 15 clubs till I figure out what club to pull out.

I swing it like wedge (thanks Ulrich), ball in the middle of the stance,
and use a smooth vertical swing to hit down and through the ball. The
result is a high, straight shot...with the ball sticking the green like
a dart. I could never do that with a 5 iron.

The TM Rescue 4 (22*), and the 3 (19*), are good too....with the 3 now
my 200 yard club. But neither is as reliable as the 25*.

A bit of lead tape on the toe of the 3 Rescue, a slightly open stance,
and a vertical swing has alleviated a baby hook problem. No such
problems with the 25*.

My swing is changing and continuing to improve, and I will eventually be
putting in a stiffer flex shaft in the 25*. Until then, I will continue
to swing the club as smoothly as I can, and I'm rarely disappointed with
the result.

Started with a Ginty - wooden headed, big keel on the bottom - but the head
is really small for my eye (and swing) so I gave it up and bought a 17*
'rescue' and a 21*. The latter went back to the garage immediately and I
went back to the 7W. The 17* is still in the bag as a 5W replacement most
of the time. Now I add hybrids 4-5 instead of 3 & 4 irons and a new 22*
Rough Cutter utility wood when needed. I almost never carry a 3 iron -
maybe never again.

My latest set-up - D-3W-17* Rescue-7W- 22* Rough Cutter - 4&5 Hybrids-6
through SW -Putter

Might change out the 17* for the 3 Hybrid on occasion or pull the 4 hybrid
for an L-wedge. Lots of options for different courses, moods or weather
conditions.

That 25 degree club is closer to a five iron than anything. If you're
struggling with the long irons, I'd think about switching to a 21 or 22 to
replace your 3 and/or 4 iron.

 Thanks

I did change to the 16 to give me options against the 3 & 5 woods and the 3
& 4 irons. I am happy with my newish 7 wood so those distances are
hopefully covered.

Chris, have you taken lessons to improve ballstriking with your mid- to
long-irons?

I wouldn't give up my 4-iron because it is straight and reasonably long. I
don't use a 3-iron on the course I play the most because I found it wasn't
called for. I have used the 3-iron (and occasionally a 2-iron) on courses
that do require it (mostly on the tee box).

You might if your shafts were different.

I did, yesterday. TrueTemper Sensicore R flex steel shaft. Trajectory
was medium high, hit the 168 yard par-3 green with the ball hitting a
couple of yards short of the pin, stopping 15 feet past it. Missed the
downhill birdie putt.

Played the entire round using a one plane swing. Best iron day I've had
in a long time.
