Which brings up a question that interests me. When do you know to put away
your driver and its distance and tee off using your long iron? It usually
takes about 3 holes before I know I can't use it except on specific holes that
won't be hurt by whatever ails me today (slice).

I don't know how you could reliably know in less than two holes unless you were
seeing exactly the same thing on the driving range ahead of time. Any one hole
could just be a fluke or easily corrected.

That said, I'm finding that my swing is perhaps more repeatable than I thought on
any given day. For example yesterday, on one hole I decided to tee off with my 7
wood (hook again but not as violent as with the driver). Out of bounds left. I tee
it up again. Out of bounds left again. The two shots looked VERY similar. I find
that is happening to me more and more. Nothing like shooting 5 from off the teebox
to do wonders for your confidence.

Another thing is that sometimes if I just leave a club in the bag for part of the
round and then come back to it, things might have straightened themselves out. But
again, how can you tell without trying 8(. And if you try, that could be another
two shots down the drain.

That's my longest iron (because I have 4 wedges) too. But I carry a 22°
instead of a 3W. My 22° is more accurate than my 5W, but not as accurate as my
4I. When I pull out my 3W for range work, I find that I'm better off carrying
my 5w.
