I was reading Mike D's message in another thread and thought I would comment here.
Our course is going through this very important phase in course maintenance this month. The greens were done three weeks ago and are back close to normal this weekend. It was interesting watching the putts roll and taking the luck of the bounce off the holes. Also, compensating for the sand as it was waiting to settle wasn't a whole lot of fun.
The fairways were aerated in the past two week and it is a bit frustrating to roll into a little hole or infront/behind the little plugs.
I guess that it is all for the good ... and, for greenfees players they do run on winter rates through this process.

Yup --- I took 40 putts the other day on the newly aerated & sanded greens --- including a 4 putt... for a 93. With better greens -- I'll probably throw out a 97....
You just have to grin & bear it --- at least the rest of my game was improving that day......

Yup, same here. I don't have a home course and play all over. Out of the four courses I played recently, only the last one wasn't aerated.
The funny thing is, I've putted decent considering (32-34 putts), ...peaking with 30 putts on the non-aerated greens on Thursday.
Some aeration putting experiences are better than others. On one course, they had aerated late in the morning, and hadn't sanded or rolled the greens. That really made every putt an adventure.

Our course has been doing something interesting here the past two "aeration cycles". They aeration holes look like they were made with a slightly elongated chopsticks. There is no sand and it has only a small effect on putting - even the next day.
I don't know if this is just a periodic thing and the next round will be back to "sand and thumb sized holes" or not, but it is a nice break from the norms that I am used to.

I saw on The Golf Channel that if your ball rolls into a aeration hole in the fairway that you get a free drop. I didn't know that before.

By the way, I have a little surprise for you at RSG NW.

In our area they slice, or poke, and sand in the spring time and in the fall they pull plugs to fix the greens from being compacted over the summer.

it's called verticutting and they do it here several times a year between the spring and fall aeration Dave

That is what I thought except that 'the cuts' seem very short to me and there was no traditional fall or spring aeration. The chipping/pitching/putting practice greens were aerated in the traditional manner.
I'm just not sure what is going on, but certainly have enjoyed almost a year without aeration holes/sand.

the verticut lines in our greens are about 1/2" long and not very deep. As you have noticed they don't affect putting very much at all.

It must be something else. These 'cuts/holes' are somewhere between 1/8" and 1/16". I actually thought the holes were round when I first noticed them.
