2 putters

Bemw 4 May 2005 06:32:05
I see that it is OK to use any club when measuring the "one clublength"
distance to drop a ball when taking relief etc. I assume you could use a
long broomstick style of putter to do the measuring and gain a bit more
clearance from the obstruction etc. So is it legal to carry two putters in
your bag, your preferred one for putting and the long one for measuring?

The question is how many times a round you need a few inches more drop
vs. having another tee to green club.

Seems a bit pointless this.......as you don't actually have to measure
it anyway! The rule simply requires you to drop within the defined
distance.....it does not say you have to measure it. However, it is
useful to mark the distance using a club........but this is only really
necessary if the drop is questionable...and you need to check it.

Using two putters eats into the number of clubs you are allowed in your
bag (max 14)....and I am sure you would find much more value in
including a club that has a more beneficial purpose than that of a
measuring tool.

cheers
david

Yes you can. But don't expect to invited to play with that group again.

Sure. You could also carry a driver that's even longer than your long putter.
Of course, you are still subject to the 14 club rule.

I believe drivers have a 48" limit now, don't they?

However, my long putter is 47". (I'm 5'6").

"Club length" for drops was created as a convenience. It would be fairer to be
a set distance that wouldn't be longer for people with longer clubs (tall
people).

Do you really think success on the golf course depends on a few inches
on an occasional drop.

No. I rarely do more than eyeball it anyway - but look for a relatively safe
spot to drop within the range allowed. I suppose there is the occasional drop
where there *is* no good place within 45" but is within 52", but not in most
rounds.

Probably fewer than the number of rounds where it would be useful to have a
left handed club in the bag (and know how to hit it).

It has always seemed odd to me that how much relief you get should depend on
what's in your bag and not be based on some absolute measurement. In the
"old" days I guess the argument was probably nobody carried a measuring
device, but I think it would be a reasonable change to declare a clublength
to be 4 feet, and I'm sure the golf shop industry would be happy to supply a
suitably marked golf tape measure.

Heck, even if we don't know how to hit it, a left handed club would save more
strokes than a 56" club that is used only for determining drop points. A bad
left-handed shot gets the ball onto the fairway.
