Thinning pitches & chips

321zyx 26 April 2005 18:21:42
I know this is going to be vague but bear with me, I have a huge problem
thinning (bad) the ball when I am pitching and chipping with my 9 iron and
pitching wedge from between 100 yds and just in front of the green. The
closer I am to the green the worse it is. So generally speaking without
knowing that much information, what could I be doing wrong

I'm a poor player. But when I am chipping, I need to concentrate in moving the
club through the ball in such a way that I lift my hands and club after - with
the club head lagging behind. Ask your pro to show you how to follow-through
with chips and pitches.

 And here's another key:

Don't peek until after you hit the ball. If you peek early you will be
pulling your upper body and your hands which makes you hit thin.

Saw it once in the thread already but just for the sake of redundancy:

Your weight has to be on your left side (righthander). If you have your
weight 60/40 or even 75/25 leaning toward the shot, it is almost impossible
to hit it thin.

First thing I can think of (without seeing you swing) is taking the club too
far back so that you have to decelerate as you approach the ball. Short
shots must be hit with a short swing, but accelerating through the ball. If
you decelerate... BAD stuff happens.

I've seen a lot of people decelerate when they hit short shots because they
take too full a swing.

Try shortening the swing and accelerate THROUGH the ball.

Also if you are trying to sweep the all, instead of hitting down on the
ball... that's a potential recipe for disaster.

Wow! A ton of great advice. I am most certainly going to give it all a shot.
Thanks again and I'll let you know how it works out.
