Spinnest Ball for Greens

Golfer 26 April 2005 01:08:50
Does it really make difference to use spinnest ball such as Pro V1 and
Precept U-Tri Tour for low 90's and high 80's handicapper for short game. Or
is "bump and run" with cheap distance ball such as Pinnacle Gold Distance
good enuf?

Spinnest balls such as Pro V1 and Precept U-Tri are too expensive so which
ball is spinnest for $20 per dozen range?

I have a friend who uses distance balls for teeing off and switch to Pro V1
or Percept U-Tri for up to 150 yards short game. So which ball falls in the
"middle", good distance ball with spin character?

And does he add 2 penalty strokes to each hole played in such a way?

What is your normal shot like with an 8 Iron? Do you hit down on the ball?
Do you take a divot? Do you hit an 8I very high? Or do you sweep the ball
and hit your shots very low?

When you hit a good 8I, does it stick where it landed, or does it bounce
another 10-20 yards?

I like the Strata Tour Soft. It's plenty long enough and has lots of
bite around the greens. They normally retail for $20/doz I got 8 dozen
of them online a month or two ago for $10/dozen. (Thanks Dave!)

That works. But he's trying to catch up after taking a drop after his first
ball went into a lake. Or maybe his first ball broke in half. Is there some
other rule that allowed him to switch balls at the 150 yard mark?

If his first ball had broken in half, he would have to play again from
the spot where he played his last shot, without penalty.
It's just good that switching is not allowed, God only knows how many
different ball kinds there would be otherwise... 100yd down super backspin
balls, putting green sink-it-all balls, tee rocket rocky balls, desert camel
sand fliers bunker balls, Jesus Christ walk on water hazard balls... and who
knows how many else.

At one time, you were supposed to replace the largest ball part. New material
changed that rule.

I'm not thinking of any way to put a replacement in play from 150 yards out
without at least a one stroke penalty. However, it might be worth keeping a
good 150 yard ball available for when you hit into the water 150 yards out.

Of course, there are people who don't have experience enough to know the rules -
but they probably can't tell the difference between ball performance anyway.
They might replace their new ball with a water ball before hitting near a hazard
- but that's not for performance reasons.
