I've had two instructors reccomend I change my grip...

Jim 23 April 2005 03:50:38
i've seen three instructors now, they all seemed to tell me the same things
except one wasn't concerned with my grip, the second highly reccomended i
change my grip to one where my right pinky overlaps or interlocks with
my left hand, and the third instructor whom i got along with the best
and who i've decided to go with didn't say anything about my grip at first,
maybe because i had bigger issues to deal with but when i mentionned
if there was anything wrong with my grip he also reccomended i think
about switching to a overlapping or interlocking grip..

i started playing in fall 2003, im in the northeast so i've only had
one complete season, last year i was usually shooting between 90-95,
with some games under 90 by a tad, some over by a tad.. my old grip
was all my fingers touching the club, ie no overlapping or interlocking.
i decided to go with the interlocking grip because that seemed to be the
most comfortable of the two (although they're both fairly uncomfortable),
my instructor said either was fine although he uses the overlapping one..
looking online it seems that most people don't interlock.. will i have an
easier time down the road with an overlapping grip? should i go with that
instead even though its a little more uncomfortable right -now-?

thanks

If you are comfortable with your older grip (sometimes called the baseball
grip) then go with it. It didn't hold back Nicklaus or Woods too much :-)

Three instructors and now you're asking us? Whatever changes
you make to your grip will at first feel uncomfortable.

Nicklaus interlocked. I believe Tiger overlaps.

Tiger interlocks, too.

I've used all three and as you I liked the baseball grip but I think in my
case that the right hand overpowers the left in the downswing, so I switched
to the overlap, I have an old shaft with the grip on it. I cut the shaft
down to about 18 inches and kept it where I could use my new grip ( watching
tv ) to get used to the feel.

Larry Bud issued forth with this:
Without the proper grip, it's going to be> hard to swing properly EVER.

There are 3 "proper" grips, (overlap, interlock and 10 finger also
called baseball grip) none is "wrong" per se. The problem is to find
which of the three works best for you. Then you need to work on finding
the right grip position; weak, strong or neutral. This is where a pro
can really be of help.
