Average Player?

What handicap is considered an average for middle-aged golf player who plays
almost on weekly basis. Is average score 95 considered an average?

I think the average round has stayed around 100, so you're a little ahead of
that.

Average handicaps for golfers include premature baldness, lousy fashion
sense, low sperm count, and general unlikeability.

You might be able to dig this out of USGA.org or somewhere else, but I
think the average handicap is somewhere around a 17. That would
translate into high 80s or low 90s.

I think it is fair to presume players with a handicap tend to be more
experienced than the occasional weekend player. Hence, that might fit
the weekly basis criteria you noted. In terms of middle-aged, I don't
think that is a factor. Ultimately, according the USGA rating formula if
you can hit the ball 250 yards, you are capable of becoming scratch.

Wonderful. I can hit the ball 250 yards. I'm nowhere near scratch.

Thanks for brightening up my day, JoePete. :)

I want to ask if you have a particular reason for wanting to know this.
Because there are various definitions of "average golfer" that can apply
depending on what you're looking for.

I've been working hard for 5 years and can see bogey golf in a year or two.
It's not hard at all to have a 250 yard slice. My hooks are usually shorter
than that. My long straight drives are rarer.

Yes, but...

A 13 handicap means that one should expect to shoot 13 over par on that course
about 25% of the time. Depending on the slope and rating (difficulty) of the
home course vs. the "away" course as well as the familiarity with the other
course, playing conditions, etc., it may not be unreasonable for a 13
handicapper with an average home score of 88 to be unable to break 100 on an
unfamiliar course.

You mean 13 over the course rating ... par's got nothing to do with it.

13 over par is close enough for government work. Do you have a reference
for "13 over course rating" as nothing in the calculation of either a
differential, an index, or a course handicap obviously supports the
claim?

Heck, most people who have trouble breaking 100 don't know HOW to play and score
properly.

I don't think its so much the ability to drive the ball 250 yards (on
average) but reaching a 470 yard hole in 2 shots which says you are
capable of becoming a scratch golfer.

That is rarer. I occasionally reach a 518 yard green at my home course in two.
I'm not a long striker, but not particularly short either (especially since
I'm a short man who started late in life). The reason I'm a bad golfer is
because I'm not consistent in my good shots.

Yep, that would be an essential part 2 of the equation. And as you
indicate, perhaps a more full measure.

My point is that in this age, 250 yards seems like a short hitter.
Whether technology, training or exaggeration is at work, I don't know.
What the course rating formula points out, maybe annoyingly so, is that
you don't have to be a big hitter to be scratch. But you do have to
put the ball in the right place.

Umm, the course rating is what the differential is based on,
everthing else flows from that (along with slope).

, I play a couple municipal courses around home fairly frequently. These are
populated by what I would call the "average" run of the mill golfer, and I'd
say most guys have trouble breaking 100.These are pretty easy courses, and
most guys I hook up with score about 48-50 for 9 holes. These are guys who
seem to play quite a bit, too, not once a month players.I'm not all that hot
myself [12 hdcp] but I can't remember any guy I hooked up with all last
year, beating me, or even feeling that"This guy is better than I am".It's
still a tougher game than we perhaos admit.

Well, I can give you statistics for Germany, straight from the German
Golf Association. Of 445560 registered players only 62830 sport a
handicap of 18.4 or below. That's about 14%. Now, the "official"
assumption of the German Golf Association is that there are about 100000
German golfers out there without handicap (and thus unregistered).
Counting them in, then that number shrinks to 11%.

So my statement of "90% of all Golfers never get below 18" is pretty
valid at least for Germany.
