Chicago is in that in-between time of WinterSpring ... The Waveland course was wet today but the sun came out and it wasn't snowing... About 15 golf fools did the 9 hole Park track next to Lake Michigan today. Lift-clean-place was the order of the day. Plugged a drive in the middle of the fairway... But it was GOLF!
Hit almost every fairway BUT could not buy a short shot. From within 100 yards to 10 yards, could not control either direction or distance! Rats! Solved it on a couple of holes by hitting the green from 145 yards (7i) and 175 yards (new Protactic Rough Cutter 22 degree that looks like a Ginty). The latter was from a fairway bunker!!!

Plugged? That's nothing. Here in New Jersey last week, we had one day (after a lot of rain, plus all the snow that's now gone) where I had to use my ball retriever fully extended to retrieve a ball from out in the middle of the fairway. A good drive to boot. Had to take the ball to the other side of the cart path (into the rough) to find ground firm enough to hit the next shot).
Here it isn't just lift, clean and place. It can be lift, clean, and walk till you find a place that's not like the Everglades.
But like you said... it's GOLF.
