Which is rarer?
Going from 1 on Thursday to winning the tournament? Going from 2 on Thursday to winning the tournament? Going from 3 on Thursday to winning the tournament? ... Going from last on Thursday to winning the tournament?

Being ahead is a good thing.
I agree. Generally whoever is in first place on day 1 of the Masters is reminded that a first place day 1 golfer has never won. But that does not translate into "you'd be better off with 4 more strokes added to your score".
However, when there are 100+ golfers if your bet is that the guy in first place on day one will be surpassed by one of the other golfers, it is a pretty safe bet most of the time.

You shot your horse in the foot, my man. Jones is 10 over through 11 today. We'll see, but it don't look to good.

I would agree that this is all but done. Unless Harrington breaks a leg> or encounters an alligator.>

Paddy could card a 12 on the 17th, like Tway did today! Whoa, it is brutal out there...
