A job in Golf

Guest 23 March 2005 00:07:27
I want a job where I can play golf every day and travel to different
courses each week, while worrying about absolutely nothing. Any ideas?

You could join the PGA Tour. The quickest way would be to qualify for and win
the U.S. or British open.

reggietodd, have you considered bumping off Vijays caddy and applying
for that job? Of course, you do realize that you would only get time to
play when he gets done.

Cheers Lee O.

Aside from all the other suggestions out there consider:

Golf course rater (I played with a guy who claimed he did this for the USGA
once -- in Hawaii at Wailea)
Correspondent for a golf related magazine (someone has to play those courses
to make up those "best 100" rankings)
Salesman for golf related merchandise or golf course related equipment or
services (I played once with a guy plugging "Natural golf")
Author -- (A few folks out there have managed to make a living writing books
on golf, maybe you can be one of them)

I imagine all of these are pretty rare opportunities, so I'll give you a
more personal perspective:

Work 20 years or so in a lucrative job while spending as little as possible
and investing well, then take early retirement if you can, continue to work
part time if you need to, and spend the rest of the time playing golf.

The USGA doesn't rate golf courses. State or local golf associations
rate courses using USGA training and criteria.

If you are interested in getting into course rating, never tell anybody
your reason is free golf as most serious course raters avoid playing
because they want to be considered course raters not players using
rating as an excuse for free golf. Also, many clubs and courses get
pissed at raters playing because they think the raters are ripping them
off.

Being a tournament organizer for a state or local golf association is a
horse of another color. I know one guy who spent a summer wondering
around a state looking for courses where the state association could
conduct various tournaments.

Aside from all the other suggestions out there consider:

I played with this guy who started a free magazine called Northwest Golf.
They did course reviews in our region. I see that they are associated with
our regional golf association.

Convention director for a large national organization.

You won't worry about absolutely nothing, but you'll be
deciding where to send 10,000 people for a week.

That takes a lot of first-hand evaluation.
