My father-in-law is known to go to a restaurant and say he has been there twice... first and last.
I demoed an R7 today for $5. The $5 also gives me an entry in the annual draw which has the demo clubs as prizes. As I said to the assistant pro today when I returned it, "I'll not be renting this again, and if I win it, I will sell it."
Although he set it up for me to have the draw tendency, I hit more slices than I hit with my TM320. Over the past 6 to 9 months I have corrected my slice and now hit mostly high draws with the occasional pull hook. I thought that this set up on the R7 would, at the least, correct the high fade and at best, incorporate a draw into my results.
I cannot understand why I hit a couple of banana slices and high fades.
I had one long drive that went straight. I had two that barely got above the ground and were sliced.
It is my opinion that I did not change my set up in any way, or my tempo.
One difference ... the shaft was stiff (I've been told I should use a stiff shaft) and the R-80 shaft on my 320 has been cut down an inch. Perhaps if I had the R7 with the same shaft things would have been different.
As an aside... after the pro configured the drive for me, I went to take the wrench and the configuration wheel with me. He said it had to stay in the pro shop and reminded me that the rules of golf don't allow an adjustment on the course. I knew that, but I thought that since I was demoing the club and we are not yet putting scores in for handicap it really wouldn't matter much and it would have given me a chance to change the settings. After the round I thought it would be nice to set the weights to "More Draw", but that's not going to happen any time soon.
Cheers... Bob
PS... very warm today, no wind. Amazing weather for early March.
Without knowing any details, I'm going to guess that much of the problem may have been in the shaft - just as you suggested.
When I got my new KZG Gemini driver, the guy at the shop put a YS-6 Stiff shaft in it. The YS-6 shaft has a whippy tip and I was slicing everything. Plus it was a 46 inch shaft.
After having an assistant pro watch me swing it, he said the head was lagging way behind the shaft with my swing. We switched it to a YS-7 X shaft, cut it to 45 inches, and Badda Bing... Badda Boom... SLICE is gone. Instantaneously.
"Coodda" been the shaft. Not the R7 head.
If you want to try a new head... why not consider the double titanium face Gemini? 460cc.

Bob, I had the exact same experience at Clubtest with the R7 HT. Screws didn't seem to make much of a difference. But the HT (high trajectory) does hit the ball high, as advertised. My theory on the the screws is they are a great placebo marketing niche for the higher handicappers and make more of a performance adjustment/advantage for the better player.

I think my R580 does a great job, no need to upgrade to an R7

The fellow in the twosome behind us today was playing a 580. Because it was so slow in front of us, we got to watch some of his tee shots while we waited for the group in front to clear the next tee. He sure hit his drives a long way... of course he is an RCMP officer who stands about 6'3 and has arms that indicate he lifts lots of weights <g>.
I'm very interested in trying a 580XD and Bobby Clobber is bringing his to RSG Sunshine Coast at the end of this month.

I haven't hit the XD but the R580 feels great when you nut it. I bet the XD will have the same great feeling
I demoed an R7 today ...>>One difference ... the shaft was stiff...
Bob, this is 180 deg different than my experience with it. I just got an R7 with a stiff shaft and a firm tip. First few hits were slight push fades, even though I configured the weights for a mid-draw. Turns out I was not going after it with 90% power...let the shaft a few more times and begun to hit low, climbing draws.
After 6 balls on the range, I took it to the course....a tight tree-lined track that penalizes you for being wayward. (ex-home of the Texas State Open)
All day I was easily 20 yds longer, sometimes more. Best part was I was very accurate with it.
I believe that "stiff" shaft is stiffer (especially at the tip) that what you might be used to...which would explain your fade experiences.
You'll get to see the new driver (first in 4 years) at RSG-NW....maybe I'll be longer than "Ocho" this year (ha!)
I just don't get why anyone would hand you a demo club set up for anything but straight. There are already enough variables to take into consideration. It's like handing someone a gun with a scope that is sighted in wrong or with a bias, and letting them go try to hit targets.
Do you think they will like the gun or the scope? Or buy it?

Which course?
Woodbridge...we didn't play it while you were here...it's not in the best of shape, so I kept you off of it
I'll only need to do that to keep up with Doug Rich
Ocho, I seem to recall you hitting a "big" drive on the 18th at Columbia Lakes last year....that came up short of where I was standing....as I waved you up to hit.

You forgot to mention the wind had just picked up straight at me...and didn't you miss the green?
