Quick survey

Manna Pheuwerds 10 March 2005 16:28:09
How about a bit of a quick survey on the question below on the percentage of
golfers of this NG that regularly break 90. An "I do" or "I don't" is
sufficient.
Mine for starters is "I don't".

Q. I've been told that most golfers can't break 90. Is this true?
A. This is true. NFG research shows that only 22% of all golfers regularly
score better than 90 for 18 holes on a regulation length course. For
females, the percentage drops to 7%, and for males it goes up to 25%.
The average 18-hole score on a full-size course is 97 for men and 114 for
women. It's an even 100 for all golfers. Only 6% of the men and 1% of the
women say they break 80 regularly.

I just read today that the average golf score is 100. I didn't catch whether
this is in the U.S. or the world, nor how they determined this. I suspect a
high percentage of the people who score over 100 would score higher if they knew
and followed all the rules.

I wonder what the average handicap is among those who keep one? I'm
speculating that 3/4 of my Men's club is 18 or better and that most
routinely break 90.

I've always figured these kinds of figures are really just guesses.

Since one cannot know the conditions under which such scores are shot
(strict rules of golf, mulligans, do-overs, not putting out, rolling the
ball in the fairway, and so on), one really doesn't know what the scores
mean.

If one shoots 97 but had three mullies and raked everything under 4 feet
away from the hole and rolled the ball in the fairway, is it really a 97?

The scorecard says 97, but it's not what was shot.

I suspect that, if played under strict Rules of Golf, the majority of
players couldn't shoot 100. Perhaps as many as 75 percent. But that's
just a guess too.

 I do.

But that's on my regular course which is relatively easy and I'm very
familiar with. Get me on a fairly tough course that I haven't played
before and someting around the low 90s is more likely. Raw scores can be
misleading ... I think handicap indexes are more meaningful (I'm at
about 13.5 now, up 2 strokes from my best of 11.5 last summer).

That depends on what course you play. I can break 80 from time to time when
my home course is set up for "recreational golf" no real rough, no or very
few tough pin positions off the #2 tees (6200-6400 yard course).

BUT!!!

If you play that course from the tips (6900-7200 yard course), and they grow
the rough to lush 3"-4" bermuda as they will do for a real tournamnet, or
just to 2" or so for the club championship, and have the tournament pin
positions on all holes for which the course was designed, I'll be lucky to
break 100. Even from the #2 tees, I can't see myself breaking 90 if it is
set up the way it was designed to be played (3"-4" rough and tournament pin
positions).

I broke ninety (93) last week playing at Carolina Club in Margate, FL.
Those pesky water hazards kept jumping in my way. Normally I shoot in the
high 70s and low 80s.

My understanding is that the NGF (National Golf Foundation) does a
pretty good job on these surveys. They send people out to courses and
even follow groups around, recording strokes and penalties.

I do.

FWIW, RSG is not composed of 'average' golfers. Most of the people here
play more often and score better than average. Plus they generally know
the rules better, or at least are more aware of them.

I dont, typically low 90s, about 92 but it really depends on the course.

My problem is I dont play enough. Maybe 4 or 5 rounds last year. If I
played once a week I am fairly confident I would regularly shoot in the mid
80s.

Define regularly. I typically shoot 90 on the nuts regulary with the

uhh, John, it was the ladies tees :) I was practicing for our annual Men's
club red tee tournament on Sunday. I must say it was a lot of fun playing my
regular course from tees that are almost 1400 yds shorter. I drove two
greens and had eagle opportunities on 3 of the 4 par 5's (missed them all).
Would have had a much better score had I not gotten greedy on #7 and tried
to cut the corner and make the green. Two balls OB :(

Ahh...thought you were talking about my beloved white tee's :-)
As soon as I start breaking 85 regularly, I'll be moving back to the blues.
A couple of the tracks I play, the red's are so much easier.
On one course two of the forced carries are taken out and one of the
remaining forced carries is shortened to 85 yards.
Normally I wouldn't care, but my wife and I are neck and neck from the
white's and from the red's she kills me.

your competition with the "boss" aside, it's good to move back on the tees
as soon as possible. We have 4 men's rated tee combinations here, black (the
tips), blue, combo (a combination of white and blue tees), and white. I
started out playing the whites 15 months ago when I moved here. I now play
either the blues or blacks depending on whom I'm playing with and I feel
like I can play any course that I go to relatively well because of it. AND,
when I get to play the reds I feel like a PRO ;)

I do. I usually have a half dozen rounds per year over 85. Last year,
one round of 90, and then the bad showing at Lawsonia.

My scoring average for my last twenty rounds (6 rounds with ESC
adjustments) last year was 82.3.

One of my goals this season is to shoot 80 or better the majority of the
time. I can easily knock 2 a side off with just one more good drive,
one more good iron shot, and a couple more crisp chips through the
entire round. That's it. How do I know? When I shoot 78, that's what
the difference was.

I've regularly broken 90 since age 12. I'll be 64 next month. It helps a
lot to start young.

 Grrrr...

I'm a 10.6. I haven't shot above 90 in a year. I played today in perfect
Houston weather, at the nicest course in town, azaleas blooming, light
breeze ... and I fell apart -- shot a 46-46 for a 92, and that included a
par birdie par finish.

Then I come home, fire up the newsgroup, and see this. And now I am
convinced that the RSG gods doomed me by this thread.

So today....I don't.

It can't hurt your course management to look at your course differently by
playing unusual tees.

100 seems about right. Most of the regular golfers will be 105 and below,
and all the weekend hacks will be like 110 to 140.

Considering most people on the course are regular golfers...
