1. Brag about their distance with irons?? Some hackers, during
water cooler conversations, make claims of hitting a 175 yard 9-iron,
and then in real play, don't even come close.
2. Get "hold" of a drive or two, and poke it 280 to 300, and then
proclaim that that's their "average" driving distance.
3. Not brag enough about their actual scores, but rather choose to
brag about their prodiguous distances with their irons and drivers.
4. Not try to be better putters, or have better short games, and brag
about getting up and down, or sinking a 25-footer?
5. When talking about golf, or summarizing a round of golf that they
played over the weekend, only talk about the distances they hit their
irons and their drivers?
6. Who have no knowledge about the golf swing, but rather formulate
their own theories, are completely off-base on alot of them, and are
20+ or more handicappers always give "golf tips" to their hacker
buddies?
A golfer in our group (LongenWild) is a pretty nice guy and damned long off the tee (or any other club for that matter), but inconsistent. You need to give him a break since most of us are retired and he is still working (somebody has to pay our current/future Social Security). LongenWild is always giving another guy (GoodenShort) a hard time, even though GoodenShort probably beats LongenWild 60% of the time.
There is a hole which is a (very good) driver for GoodenShort and a middle/long iron for LongenWild. Goodenshort put his driver on the fringe when LongenWild said "what is that you're hitting on a par 3 - a driver?".
GoodenShort was prepared. He grinned and showed the bottom of his driver to LongenWild. It had a piece of masking tape on the bottom and carefully inked on the tape was "9 iron".

Mostly ego, I suspect. Or they were reading the club upside down and
it was actually a 6.
I did that once - right after I got my LW, I teed off at 7I distance and hit a nice shot into the middle of the lake in front of me.
It isn't just hackers who want long hitting irons - otherwise manufacturers wouldn't keep changing the lofts to fool us into thinking we are hitting farther.

Ego. Or a misunderstanding of what "average" means.
"Average" has lots of meanings. In the case of golf distances, it doesn't make sense to include a whiff as a zero yard shot to determine your "average" distance so that you pick the correct club in your approach shot.
We have to scatter graph successful shots, know how often our shots with a particular club are successful (compared with other clubs), and then make our choice.
That said - most hackers are pretty clueless here.
