In 2008 when it comes time to vote for McCain or Clinton

John Rogers 24 May 2005 07:31:01
 I'm voting the Hillary ticket.

John McCain can tongue-kiss the rosebud resting between my pasty white
cheeks.

Why, what'd he do?

The most grevious sin imaginable for Rogers. Worse than murder, rape, or his
son getting married to Van Tiffin.

Political cockblocking.

You know my reaction to the 7 Democrats who brokered this deal is
somewhat along the same lines - if they're going to act like Republicans
they may as well move over the dark side officially. Lieberman in
particular, is as much a Democrat as Zell Miller.

George W. Bush in 2000.

And before that, George HW Bush in 1988, Ronald Reagan in 1980
and 1984.

Ford was successful by appealing to the moderate "I won't prosecute
you" electorate.

I'm thinking Giuliani or Pataki in '08 with Barbour on deck for 2012.

Egad. The Howard Dean of the Republican Party.

If both Clintons are dead by then, Barbour will be campaigning
against their corpses.

Hillary would lose a general election for national office to a head of
cabbage. She has a major Darth Vader factor and there is nothing at all the
Dems willl be able to do that will make that go away. Liberal Dems can wish

has is appeal to liberals and it is impossible in today's America for a
liberal to be elected President when the clear majority of Americans lean

What I meant, and should have stated more clearly is, when was the last time
a Republican was successful in the primaries by appealing to independents
and moderates and then went on to win the Presidency?

Revisionist swine. Sh quit the PMRC, they didn't exile her. No one put
a gun to Tipper's head and forced her to swing to the left. No one
forced Gore to drop the pro-life stance that got him elected to the Senate.

Jon

Oh well ya that's true. That would just be silly. Just as Dems must appeal
to the nanny state liberals to gain support. The real trick is making the
label stick to the opponent. Whichever candidate succeeds in doing that
wins.

He may well have been pissed about it, but you give Dobson way more
credit for power and influencea amongst Republicans. I'd never even
heard of the guy before the conference that Frist had a videotaped speech

I'm not aware of John McCain giving a wild-eyed, spittle-spraying speech

McCain has stood with Bush at several events before and after the election.

John McCain has all kinds of spine when it comes to maneuvers to get

I hope he hasn't thrown his arm out after patting himself on the back

Ummm... the deal was between 14 individual Senators (7 Repubs fighting
against the will of their caucus and 7 Dems performing at the orders
of their caucus). Frist was not party to nor did he ever agree to
abide by such a "deal".

Newspapers? Rarely. I'm not familiar with Barbour at all - what he
believes in, track record, etc. Dobson I'd not heard of until a few
weeks back. For two people that are supposedly so influential, don't you
think it says something when I've not heard much if any about them? (And
yes, I keep up with things mostly online).

He has some strange ideas on moderation and compromise. And his ideas
won't win enough of the Republicans to gain the nomination, even if some
Democrats love him.

How did you break your back?

Falling 10-ft onto a steel deck onto my back. My head recovered (at
least so some people say). My lower back never did. Fractured a lumbar
vertebrae and never really knew it until a few months down the road.

Yep.

Five officers out of the wardroom of the ship that I was stationed on
have now made Admiral. If I had been able to stay in, next month would
have been finishing my 20th year.

What's 9/11 got to do with Iraq?

There was a fundamental shift in foreign policy following 9/11. Allowing
Saddam to continue to defy the US (and UN) and with its suspected WMD
programs (that everyone thought he had), the new policies insisted that
something must be done. The 9/11 attack, however, did not involve Iraq.

Basically, the 9/10 status quo did not work on 9/12.

It's fine to oppose the President's plan. But they aren't really giving
any of their own ways to fix the problem. Back before Bush, the
Democrats were talking about how Social Security needed fixing. Now when
Bush wants to fix it, they say there is no problem. That's not the way

I may get MEB'd, myself. I'm told I have a chance at medical retirement

I don't consider that likely, though.. more likely about 30%.

IF they MEB me, anyway.

Please explain how you come to that conclusion.

Because as much as you might dislike him, the vast majority of republicans
would vote for him. Furthermore, a significant majority of independents
would vote for him. And to top it off, many centrist democrats and even
those further left who have become disillusioned by their own party's lack
of coherence and fortitude would vote for him.

But, once he got in office, the party wouldn't be able to pull his strings,
so I can understand why you wouldn't want that.

I'm not sure the popularity is as rampant in the Republicans for McCain
as much as independents and democrats.

Its not that McCain would not have his strings pulled, I'd have no
problem with that. My problem is that I don't agree with some of the
things he says or does. It doesn't agree with what I believe sometimes.
I think as a candidate, I'd want someone that closer matched me. And no,
I couldn't name off a name right now if you asked.

So you think McCain will be our next President?

He has about as much chance of being elected President as I do of
being declared the Czar of this newsgroup. He pisses off too many
people for the Republican heirarchy to allow it.

Which is much to their fault, as far as I'm concerned.

Well 2008 is a few years away, so the field is still pretty wide open.
And honestly I don't think that John McCain could win (or should win
either).

Well, I definitely would not give up my principles and vote for a liberal
just because he runs as a Conservative.

Having "one of the Keating Five" McCain as the Republican choice is akin to
having no vote.

And to think that 9% of these polled morons think that Hitlery is a

Considering that's pretty much exactly how Bush just got elected >(see: Rove, Karl), it would be poetic justice.

So you're telling me you don't like Dubya because he's so liberal?
