I was underwhelmed. Not that it wasn't the best of the latest trilogy... it was. And the special effects were (again) worth the price of the matinee ticket. But the "movie" struck me as being more of a bunch of disjointed scenes thrown together to fulfill an obligation rather than a story that "flowed".
I bet if Lucas decided to make Episodes 7, 8, and 9, they would be MUCH better movies than 1, 2, or 3. Potentially even better than 4, 5, or 6. I think the potential to create a "story" would be greater without the sense of obligation that (to me) pervaded 1, 2, and 3.

There will be no 7,8, or 9 until Lucas's kids get a hold of the rights and need some more billions.
There's too much expanded universe stuff for Lucas to tell his own story without going a hundred or so years beyond ANH, and he sure as hell isn't interested in making movies based on somebody else's story.
Lucas has at least co-written every movie he has ever produced or directed, and that's no accident.
Yeah, Bryan S. Slick <onyx_hokie@yahoo.cem>, well... that's just like... your opinion man.

Agree on all points. I suspect he *could* make 7-8-9, but he has stated on numerous occasions that he has no intention of doing so. The main reason he's given is that it would take another decade of his life, and he doesn't want his last three films to be Star Wars films.
I don't doubt that he'd likely have to go against (or work around) some of the EU stuff plays a part in the decision to stop at six movies. Then again, supposedly, he has blessed-off on nearly all of the EU novels, so it might be that they match his vision for the Galaxy Far Far Away post-ROTJ.

Lucas needs to steal a page from the "Star Trek" universe and farm out the other three movies. It's not like Gene Roddenberry directed every single ST episode/movie ever done.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did just that.

I'm not sure. There was a lot of Star Trek stuff put out between
and the first movie. They pretty much ignored all of it. And then the> series came and they ignored movie stuff unless it was convenient. Not> saying Lucas would do that, but.....
The franchises are totally different in the way they treat the "outside" stuff. In Trek, only the shows and movies are "canon"(and with Enterprise they even threw that out the window), and all the books, video games, etc. etc. have no impact on future shows, or on other outside material.
The Star Wars franchise uses an "expanded universe" concept. Every single book, tv show, video game, etc. is "true" and continues to be true for every subsequent book or whatever. LucasArts, and in some cases even George Lucas himself, oversee the production of all of this stuff to make sure it all gybes with the movies, previously written EU stuff and Lucas's larger notions of how the Star Wars universe works. It's disjointed at times when different writers get ahold of the same characters, and most of it is just pulp fiction, but some of it is really good stuff.
True, Lucas *could* just tell them all to go to hell, and he's certainly stubborn enough to do it if he felt motivated to...I just don't see any desire on his part. He's got another Indiana Jones movie to write and produce, and has several "indie" type projects he wants to do.

He offered Spielberg and Ron Howard each one of the prequel movies. They both said no and that he was the only one to do them.

I remember an article a long time ago (right after SW came out) where Lucas said he was going to turn the other movies over to others and then come back and do the final one (I still think he said #9 at the time, though he now claims he never intended more than 6) himself and show up all the others.

If Peter Jackson is offered VII and VIII, I think that Lucas would be hard-pressed to show him up with IX.
