Mt. Rushmore of CF coaches

Jon Russell 29 March 2005 06:28:21
Blatantly stolen from CFN in an attempt to appease Vijay....

Okay - let's have 'em - which 4 coaches would you put up on a CF Mt. Rushmore?

Rockne? Bear? Wilkinson? Dr. Tom? JoePa? Yost? Bobbah?

CFN chooses Rockne, JoePa, Bobbah and Bear - who would you chose and who would
you take of the list and why?

I'd be mightily tempted to take off Bobbah and replace with with Dr. Tom - win
totals aren't everything and I'm a homer kook.

Bear Bryant? Do we really want to immortalize a cheater even more?

I wouldn't put Osborne up there unless they added a small statue of
Lawrence Phillips on the stairs leading up the side of the mountain.

It figures you wouldn't let Bama slide without
a slam..but Bear didn't cheat, he didn't have
to- players came there because they wanted
to play for him and Bama..his recruiting was
practcally done before he got there.....
And he wouldn't have let a rapist QB hang
around to "lead" his team the next year..
like one college we know about is doing...But we understand, it must be
bad when ones favorite team can never win the "big one"..

Talk about cheating, Grambling did plenty of
it to give Frank Robinson his minor league
record...notice how the pundits stopped
bragging on Franks record after JoePa and
Bobbah passed Bear's record.....why you
hardly hear his name anymore....

I know a couple high school coaches deserve
it more than Frank.....Robinson that is.

Are you going to go find the coach in division 2 and division 3 with the
most wins too? Why does winning a lot of games against highly inferior
competition put you in the same category as those four? It ain't a whole

Give that man a golden taco.

In other words, he was a big fish in a small pond. Great for him. But
don't compare him to those who played against tough competition.

The SWAC isn't just bad football compared to 1-A. It's bad football
compared to 1-AA. Robinson was relatively impressive when Grambling was
still getting better black athletes and playing a few big boys, but a lot of
those wins came against teams that just played playground football.

Replying to Wonko the Sorenson
You've been reading too many OSU web sites. Hayes had three MNCs, only >one was consensus (1968). ÂHis team was on probation in 1956 and he>had two losing seasons. ÂI don't think the icy glare should be on Mt. >Rushmore, but he had three MNCs, two consensus, no losing seasons, more >wins and a better winning percentage.

But to be fair, the Icy Glare took over a team that was at the pinnacle
of college football, a 2-time defending national champion. Then it was
another 20+ years before they won another, so I don't think I'd even
really give him consideration.

I wouldn't put Hayes up there, either, by the way, but he did have an
impressive resume.
My choices:
Leahy, Neyland, Yost, Wilkinson

Solid list, no question.
As I said earlier, I think Camp is a must list for me, but that's
partially because of contributions to the game, not just success or
ability as a coach, so I'm not sure it's the same criteria list.
