Catching up on movies

Marty McMahone 24 March 2005 06:47:41
Spring break last week let me catch up a little

at the theater -- Hitch
Pretty good chick flick. Typical Will Smith character, but he's funny
and there's some good stuff. Never win an academy award, but fun. Worth a
matinee anyway.

DVD
Friday Night Lights -- ok, but I was disappointed. Did a pretty good job of
capturing the nutiness that can be Texas high school football. Thought it
flew kind of high over the situation overall though. And didn't really find
the game action compelling. Not knowing whether they won or lost the last
game, though, they did keep me guessing a bit (I did start to wonder if it
was going to be the famous game where a team scored 3 TDs in the last couple
of minutes to take the lead, then had the other team run the kickoff back on
the last play of the game)

Napoleon Dynamite -- watched this on the recommendation of some of my
students. Dumb, but moments of absolute hilarity. There were about four
scenes that had me laughing very hard, but the basic story feels like a
Saturday Night Live sketch gone way wrong.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow -- possibly the most overrated thing
I've seen in a while. Poor writing. Worse acting. Interesting look, but
really just video gimmicks.

Troy -- better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much. A couple of
really good scenes. You have the feeling they just tried a little too hard,
though.

I had nearly identical reactions to both of these movies.

I was incredibly disappointed in Sky Captain. There was so much potential
there, but it just felt like an American high school kid was trying to
imitate a Miyazaki movie and failing miserably. The plot and the overall
visual look were great, I thought, but you're absolutely right about the
script and the acting.

overrated? who the hell was saying it was any goodt? :)

the main problem with SKY CAPTAIN was that it was obviously an homage
to all those old serials, but unfortunatley, if all you do is use stuff
from the serials and don't add anything new of your own, then all you
get is something that is so trite and derivative.

now that you mention it, after I watched it, I went back and noticed that it
was a split decision from the critics. They either really liked it or
really hated it. I'd just seen a few that really liked it beforehand I
guess.

We liked it for that retro design/art and the cool robots. The acting -
blah, but I really need one of those killler robots.

it.

We watched Sky Captain the other night -- on demand. It was mildly
funny. Everything about it was sepia including the laughs.
Not the worst movie ever made. I'm glad I didn't watch it in the theater.

Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite animated films. Like everything
Miyazaki does, it's beautiful, fantastical and slightly confusing.

Sky Captain really looked like someone was trying to imitate it.

I will have to check it out then. My latest movie acquisition is an odd
one. "The Man Who Laughs". It is a 1928 silent film with Mary Philbin and
Conrad Veidt. It is pretty good, actually.
