What is a flywheel and what happens if it cracks?
it's the thing that makes the engine run smooth.. and where the starter engages to get it going...

IIRC, the flywheel is a big, heavy disk of iron that spins up with the engine and smoothes it out by its inertia. If it cracks, I guess it might come apart under stress and fly into pieces.
I agree, this just can't be good.

It could shatter and fly thru the floorboard and circumsize you even more.

In addition to what's been said, it's also the part of the engine the transmission connects to.
So, if it's cracked, and the crack grows to the point where it splits into several pieces (likely not all that long), the starter won't engage the engine anymore, and even if it did, the only thing the engine would do is spin itself.

Yeah, anything where they're going to be dropping a part of the car out that weighs about a quarter ton(no way to get at the thing without separating the engine and transmission and moving one of them out of the way)... well, that's something they're going to make a bit of cash on.

A crack in the fly wheel is like a split in the time domain reflectomoter. Like a walk from the dark side to light side. Like speeding thru a school zone. Like ...........oops I fell asleep.

That would be the harmonic balancer. At the front of most motors where the drive pulley attaches to the crank.
The flywheel is one of 2 things:
It attaches the torque converter to the motor's crank in an automatic tranny car. As mentioned elsewhere, it has a ring gear on it for the starter to engage. This is *sometimes* refered to as the "flexplate", and any weights attached are only there to balance itself. It is thin and can be prone to cracking if it is used hard- hard acceleration, downshifting manually, etc.. NOT AN EXPENSIVE ITEM. Although labor is usually excessive due to pulling either the motor or the tranny/transaxle to replace.
In a manual/stick, while also being attached to the crank and having a ring gear as in the automatic car, it is a very heavy piece that is used by the clutch to pinch the clutch disc between the two when you "let out" the clutch... These usually don't crack. Explode at very high RPM clutch drops, yes- but not crack. These are a bit more pricey- and take even more labor to replace. --

That man knows his flywheels. I just got that estimate.
Jeffrey Davis <res099c9@alltel.net> wrote:> What is a flywheel
A big spinning wheel of metal attached to your crankshaft and transmission input shaft. On most cars the starter spins it to start your car. It also works as energy storage for you engine.

Now, that's something entirely different. That's merely a band of rubber glued to the crank and to the crank pulley on opposite sides, meant to help smooth out the accessory belt vibrations. The flywheel is, indeed, a large metal disc attached to the far end of the crank from the belts, to which the starter normally engages, and to which is attached the transmission.
BTW, if your car has a harmonic balancer, you can expect your belt to fail (and thus, your coolant pump, power steering pump, AC, and alternator) at about 80-95,000 miles. Just a heads up.
