I have some downloaded video clips (that probably originally came from a bootleg DVD, since there are Russian subtitles) that are very dark. Do any of you know of any video editing software that is user friendly (i.e. for people who are dumn at this sort of thing) and not too expensive that could be used for fixing up this sort of thing? The two programs I have are not for video, but only for pictures, as far as I can figure out.

They play ok - I just want to lighten them up.
then I would recommend Sony's Vegas Video and DVD 2... if it's a short term thing to alter it once it's free, they have shareware ware qualities... they should as they cost IIRC 500bucks for the full version
