Looks like a fair sized one. 5.4! Everything OK?

Weird. We didn't feel it at all a bit further south and west. Or maybe
we're just heavy sleepers.

Nay, I made some Texas size beef-n-bean buritoes. That was a methane
explosion, not an earth quake. It measured 11.2 on the sphynkter scale.
I think I'm gonna need my left butt cheek replaced, the flapped valve has
misfired causing a rift in the gas to nose variable. I predict a really bad
shiot storm for Vermont because of this rift.

Yup. Where we were, it was only intensity 3, meaning, basically, "nothing
fell off shelves".

It was a "rattle-the-lamps and feel-like-a-big-truck's-going-by" for about
twenty seconds. Nothing to be alarmed about. If it'd been a bit bigger
things might've fallen over (like your impressive collection of Wolaver
bottles) and then you might've woken up.

If I'd lost a Wolvaer's Brown Ale, there would be hell to pay.

Indeed. But it's the best we got here in the east. You got to go at least
to the Mississippi (New Madrid, MO, to be precise) before you get anything
to write home about.

I'll stand our ice storms up against yours any day, though.

I'd blame Canada. Or New Hampshire.

Is it like true permafrost mud, where the bottom layer stays frozen and you
get this incredibly goopy muck on top because the water can't drain away?

Mmm...nah...I'm pretty sure the mega ice storm of the winter of 96-97
up in here stood up to your ice storms a lot better then say...your
little shaker did to the Nisqually quake of 2001. We got us wild
Indians shooting around the place and no law in sight. This is the
wild west afterall. Plusteth it rains all the dang time.

4.0? Well, congratulations. But that wouldn't even slosh the water
around in the swimming pool.

You should move to Mammoth Lakes - earthquakes all the time and they're
caused by lava forcing its way to the surface in preparation to blowing
the whole town off the map.

You know what scares me? Visiting the East coast, with all those brick
buildings. Death traps. Wouldn't find a Californian in an unreinforced
brick building.

Congratulations!

Not a big one in California, but that's based on a a lifetime of experience
living/working in buildings designed to survive earthquakes.

Me, I wouldn't want to live in Tornado Alley.

We were watching Ugly Betty. It was a re-run from last year. The
earth moved for my wife, then it moved for me. It was a magnitude 4.2
quake on the unconsolidated crust east of the Hayward Fault, in
Lafayette, California.

You call THAT a quake? My class paused for 8 seconds, made
two pithy comments and went back to work. - Tony

Yeah it was the weekest quake ever. I didn't feel it here.
