DC/MD/VA:
Bad: - A lot of fake punk thugs even in affluent areas. - Driving in DC is hell. - Nightlife is curfew like. It feels 'chaperoned'. - Rent is expensive
Good - Great cultural diversity. - Many big colleges all within 15 minutes. - Rural, Suburban, Urban life all within driving distance.

Colorado Front Range:
Bad: Not a lot of cultural diversity Layout of Fort Collins (wasn't planned for a population greater than say....50,000 heh) Interstate driving is hail. Housing costs are only affordable to affluent married couples Californicated Losing a lot of our open space.... great views, etc.
Good: Still have some great views left....nothing beats the Rocky Mountains in the Springtime Great schools, for the most part Not so big that we have high crime, but big enough to have everything we could possibly need or want. Most of my fambly is here.

Central Vermont:
Good
- Relaxed life - Natural beauty/hiking/outdoorsy things - Skiing - Cheese - Fall colors - Mild summers - The people - Minimal crime [1]
Bad
- Can be brutally cold in the winter (but see skiing) - Mud season - What is spring? - Sun goes down at 4:15pm in December

[1] about a year ago, a message was sent to the campus community letting everyone know that three cars had been stolen in the area recently. Included was a reminder that it may not be a good idea to leave your cars unlocked with the keys in the ignition, because that was how two of the cars were stolen.
Bad: - Not a lot of night life (not like I care, but still) - Traffic too congested for this small of a city - Has every chain store practically known to man
Good: - Can take a day trip to either St. Louis or Chicago quite easily - Has an airport even though it's small - Actually has a BBQ joint now, and it's good!!! - Drives along the river are nice - Has a minor league baseball team - Has every chain store practically known to man - Did I mention St. Louis and Chicago? For that matter Milwaukee. Cubs, Whitesox and Cardinals oh my! Except you can't get a Cubs ticket

Good - City of Mission Viejo: Nationally Distinquished Grade School; State distinquished H.S.; #2 H.S. FB team in the country
- Orange County is most conservative county in country - Two hours to Ski slopes and minutes to some of the best beaches in Continental U.S. - expensive real estate prices (good if you have owned your home for a while) - best H.S. Good * Small town atmosphere but some city facilities * 10 minute drive to work (and its in the next town) * Golf in January * Easy drive to Dallas or Austin if you want big city stuff * Good, friendly people

Va Beach
Good: Ocean or Bay only minutes away. Lots of history around here. Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown and civil war sites nearby Seafood. Everywhere. Minor league baseball and hockey. Dozens of concert venues with a wide range of music and arts. From big, little, up-and-comers to has-beens, they're here every month during the summer. Big city world with self-contained neighborhoods. You actually get to know your customer base by name.
Bad: City coucil is a clusterfsck. This is compounded by their constant power struggles with the ocean-front business associations. No centralized commercial center. The whole city is one (or twenty) giant suburb. Traffic can be horrid during the summer. Real estate is ridiculous. Townhouses and condos go for $300k. Oceanfront parking is owned by the hotels. The mountains are 3 hours away. That's just too far for day trips. -- mutt
I forgot to add for Peoria, the sports good and bad.
Good: You can get some decent conversation going on basketball My Cornhusker affiliation does not offend at all so I can wear my Husker clothes You can get some decent conversation going on baseball
Bad: College football is dead to people here. My Mizzou Tiger affiliation does offend and I can't wear my Mizzou clothes Getting a decent football game on TV isn't hard here, but getting a B12 football game is.

This makes me realize that the perfect real estate is Ann Arundel County, MD, or similarly-place real estate in VA (though I think VA sucks for othe reasons); that puts you about 2 hours from both the Atlantic beach and the mountains, and the Bay is right there at your doorstep.
There are probably similarly-located parcels in NC and SC, but without the Bay there's no comparison.

If I had my druthers, I'd prefer the mountains on my doorstep and the ocean/bay a day trip away. Somewhere on the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge or Rockfish Gap.

Best: Crime virtually nonexistent Traffic virtually nonexistent World-class freshwater and saltwater fishing Natural beauty Mountains and beaches within 10-minute drive Temperate climate 20 hours of sunlight during summer College football games on TV at 8:00 am during season No state income tax Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend
Worst: Few restaurants No professional/college sports teams Frequent rains, lotsa mud Not much live music/nightlife Must fly or take ferry to reach major metropolitan areas Occasional periods of inclement weather make it impossible to leave island 6 hours of sunlight during winter Much of road system unpaved and pothole-ridden

Good:
-No neighbors visible from my 20 acres -Horses in the front yard -Dark, starry nights -Quiet nights (if you don't count crickets and tree frogs) -3 miles from the nearest boat ramp -Surrounded by state park land with hiking/mtnbiking/equestrian trails -10 minute drive to the airport where my flying club is based -Amenities of the RTP area (see Tony Rice's post) are a 30-45 minute drive away
Bad:
-A 20-30 minute drive to ANYTHING (except recreation) -No broadband available -30 mile (one-way) commute to work and telecommuting not a practical alternative (see above about broadband) -Two words: hunting season. -Exurban development run wild in another part of the county causes massive property tax increases for everyone
