I agree that the Self Esteem Movement is and always has been a load of crap.
NARCISSISM AND VIOLENCE - Researchers recently have found that there
no clear link between low self-esteem and many violent and risky> behaviors assumed to be related to it, including delinquency,
violence> against others, suicide, eating disorders, and teenage pregnancy.> However, high self-esteem was positively correlated with drunken> driving, racist attitudes, and other risky behaviors. They found> that those convicted of violent crimes did not differ in self-esteem> from those who did not. But they did dramatically differ in narcissism.> The research suggests that batterer programs should not be focusing
abusers' self-esteem, but rather on their narcissism and
self-control.
Self-esteem cannot be reasonabley measured. However, if you believe the studies there is an inverse relationship between "self-esteem" and the bad stuff listed above. Girls have lower self-esteem than boys, it is alleged, but they suffer far fewer ills of society and do better in school.
