everything i've read makes it sound terrible (like the third matrix movie). why can't these directors and producers do better with all the dough that the movie companies shove in their pockets?

You can always go watch "Repo Man" again. 21 years later, it's stood the test of time.

It's quite decent for a comic book movie.
Most people just don't realize going in that it's a comic book movie.
