Ricky Ray Sweepstakes: My Prediction

Glen Hallick 8 May 2005 21:42:15
Ricky Ray re-signs with the Eskimos. Jason Maas and Khari Jones are either
dealt to other teams or are released. In the end one of them ends up with
the Argonauts and the other ends up with the Tiger-Cats.

The Canadian Press is reporting that Ray will likely want a contract around
$400,000/year. If I remember correctly Ray was getting around $75,000/year
during his previous stint with the Eskimos. I can't see them keeping Ray,
Maas, and Jones for very long. Although they would be the most talent trio
of QB's for the Eskimos since 1987 when they had Matt Dunigan, Damon Allen
and Tracy Ham or since 1978 when they had Tom Wilkinson, Warren Moon and
Bruce Lemmerman.

Ray was making the league minimum at ~$32,000/year.

You'd be better off trying to figure out which NFL team will try him out
first. Regardless, I can't see him coming back to the CFL this season.
Maybe for 2006. Its his dream to be in the NFL. He pretty much requested
his release from the Jets if you read the quotes from his agent. He likely
has interest elsewhere in the National league.

Tuesday at 3 pm (eastern or central?) is the deadline for Ray to clear
waivers. Will another team pick him up? Likely. But if he does come back to
the CFL, I think he'll go to the Eskimos.

I've said it before but it bears repeating: Jason and the Argonauts!

My guess is he'll clear waivers and then sign as a free agent. I believe
that any team that claims him would also claim his contract, which is
probably longer than most teams would like, and he'd also have to fit into
the way the salary cap works in the NFL (ie. signing bonus, which year his
salary is applied to under the cap, etc....it gets complicated).
