I felt the same way when Buono cut Pitts for pretty much the same reasons, but I got over it. In an era with salary restrictions it is just a fact of life.
Somewhere along the way, the players who really still want to play will take that pay cut. History has shown that if they expect to continue to make the same kind of coin on another team they are likely to be selling cars back home.
The Riders gut Andrew Greene and Nate Davis. Sigh. Both were quality players. who are victims of the salary cap. It also sounds like the Riders didn't handle it all that well. Greene is 37 and will find it harder to catch on with another teem, but he could still havea couple of more good years in him, even all-star ones. Nate Davis is only 33 and you would think someone would take a look at him. He had a few injury problems in 06, but he is still ofe of the best DTs in the CFL. His sack stats wree down the last couple of years as teams concentrated on stopping him and Scott Shultz on the inside which helped the ends get the sacks. You cannot judge everything by stats in football.
I have to wonder if the salary cap was not set a bit too low? Greene was making $140 000 and Navis about $100 000. Those are not huge numbers in pro sports by any stretch of the imagination. A slightly higher salary cap would allow teams to keep some of these veteran name players. I do not want to see a return to the bad old days of the late 1970s 1980s when it semed that players would come in out of college, play for a cuple of of years, develop into something good and then suddenly be dumped because the next kid out of college would do the job for twenty grand less. There were a lot of players who got dumped in their prime and the wholesale turnover makes it hard to build loyalty among the fans. Both Davis and Greene lived in Saskatchewan in the off-season and contributed to the community. They deserved better.
