| Pete Paul-B 17:25:03 |
| | Jules and I went to Pete's funeral service yesterday. It was very moving, and blessedly short - about 14 minutes or so, which Pete would have appreciated. Ian Dalziel was also there, and Em and her family, as well as Pete's Dad and Sister went on to say how much they'd appreciated all the postings here and on t'other newsgroup, and how much these postings had meant to them, had shown them a side of Pete which none of them had known about.
It was very moving, very sad yet somehow joyful in the memories.
Thank all of you who posted your memories and your condolences, both here and elsewhere. It has seriously helped both Pete's family and Emma and her family in their loss.
RIP Pete. -- Paul-B

| Big hit for the 83? Bob Paxton 01:07:10 |
| | Jayski is reporting that the 83 team may be in for a whopping fine for having sheet metal on the car that failed to meet minimum thickness requirements.
A question for the more technically minded---how much of a performance enhancement could this be? I assume the idea is to save some weight that could then be distributed around the car in such a way as to make it handle better.
If this could be a significant performance advantage, then I can see where a really big fine would be in order.

All-time Top 60 ===============
The addition of the 2008 Chinese GP results only changes the career averages for the six current drivers who are ranked in the all-time top 60 (Alonso, RÄikkÆnen, Massa, Hamilton, Coulthard & Barrichello).
Hamilton's 'hat-trick' weekend sees him rise from 23rd to 21st [Note that from Australia 2009 he will be in a position to rise by many places as his full average comes into play - currently it would be 124.68, ranking him fifth.]
RÄikkÆnen and Massa see a small increase in their averages, while the other three fall slightly.
Current drivers are indicated by a '*'. Their averages are volatile and will fluctuate from race to race.
Drivers with a limited number of starts are indicated by '%1', '%2' or '%3' showing those with 25%, 50% and 75% of their respective averages.

Hamilton missed a grand slam by only three laps, but those three were led by his team mate so McLaren achieved a team GS for the 33rd time in their history. They are second to Ferrari who have 39. I don't have the complete data for teams. McLaren's last was at Melbourne this year, while Ferrari did it in France this year.

John McCoy <igopogo@ix.netcom.com> wrote in news:Xns9B3A6059472A8pogosupernews@216.168.3.30:
The Win: This track hasn't been too friendly to anyone other than Johnson and Gordon in recent years...but one guy who's run strong most races is Jeff Burton. So I'll pick Burton to make like Biffle and win 2 in a row. Don't think Burton was ever in contention, but the pit road penalty killed it.
Top Ford: The Roush cars tend to suck here. I'll pick Biffle for top finishing Ford, only because I like him. It wouldn't be a surprise to see all 5 Roush cars outside the T10 (that latter not being part of the RPG, just an observation). Edwards & Kenseth made the T10, Biffle did not.
Top Dodge: Kurt Busch. The last Ford guy to do well at Martinsville, and he's been showing some life in the Penske Dodges too the last couple of races. JPM. Wouldn't have guessed that. I will guess that Busch hit something/was hit, since he was many laps off the pace at the end (I didn't see the race, unfortunately).
Top Toyota: Tony Stewart. The other non-Hendrick driver (beside Burton) who's had success here, and it looks like the team has recovered a bit of focus for the last few races. Hamlin (who I'd almost picked for this, actually). For Stewart, I assume the same as for Busch, above.
Top Rookie: We have Speed, McCumbee, and Almirola added to the usual (and now very short) list. I'll pick Almirola for the top rookie. A point! Yay.
Story: since I'm doing this before quals, I'll make a qualifying RPG (and that way be down one before the race even starts). Sterling Marlin will succeed in qualifying James Finch's car, meaning one of the normal suspects will go home (not part of the RPG, but the go home cars will be Derrike Cope and either McCumbee or Raines). Well, we all know he woulda did if they'd actually qual'd. I see on Jayski that this sets the record for most rainouts, for the 4th time this year (this being #9, most previous 5). While NASCAR can't do anything about the rain, they need to start thinking about ways to work around rain...starting 1/4 of the races by points order is ridiculous.

2007/2008 Comparison ====================
How does the fastest lap of the whole weekend (3 practice sessions, 3 qualifying segments and the race) compare to the fastest lap of the weekend in 2007?
Here are two tables - one compares driver with driver; easy enough if the same driver remains in the same team. If not, compare the 2007 driver with the guy who replaced him.
'S' is the session when the best lap was achieved (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R) 'Lps' are the total laps in all sessions (2007 excludes any third drivers) 'Diff' is the gain/loss in seconds '%Diff' is the difference in time as a percentage of the 2007 time
A negative Diff/%Diff mean that the driver/team improved. Positive means they got worse.
There can be several reasons for the variations seen.
Apologies if the tables wrap - save it and reformat if you are interested.
Note: Spyker-Ferrari was renamed to Force India-Ferrari, all other team names remain the same.

Winner: DEJr. It is time for him to win his second race of the year. +0 He tried, but there weren't quite enough green flag laps there at the end.
1. David Ragan crumpled his primary car and is starting from the back. But the kid has some fire in his belly. He will finish in the +1 YEA. He pushed it and ended up in 13th.
2. Michael Waltrip seems to race well here for a while and then causes or gets involved in a wreck. He'll hold true to course. Mikey will finish outside the top 30. +0 Mikey pretty much kept the fenders on it and finished up in 18th.
3. Bobby Labonte isn't showing too much in practice, but he may be sandbagging. Bobby Labonte finished in the top 20. +0 He was doing pretty good for a while, but stuff happens when you race in the pack.
4. JPM showed some speed in practice. He'll finish in the top 10. +0 I meant the top 15. Honest!! Oh, well. 14th is not bad.
5. Snowball's chance in heck that this one will score this week, but I am committed to it this Chase. No more than 5 Chasers in the top +0 I stopped counting at 6..........

| | Some surprises for me on this one..
Top Five (in no order)
Gordon, J - 1 Johnson - 1 Hamlin - 1 Stewart - 0 Montoya - 0
and the winner...... Jeffro! He's gotta lose the monkey sometime this year and he is good at Martinsville!
Well, there's always next week... <sigh>
I have mixed feelings about Montoya but he has done well lately as has Mc Murray so they may sneak into the top five as well.

Weather: Air 28, Track 36, Dry [I don't have full weather data]
Notes: Mark Webber qualified sixth, but an enforced engine change (after a failure during P3) meant that he was demoted 10 places on the grid. Team-mate, David Coulthard, failed to make it into Q2, partly because he was briefly held up by BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld during Q1. The stewards agreed with the Scot, demoting Nick by three grid slots - the second such penalty he has received in the last three GPs.

Notes: Hamilton led the way for most of the hour, but in the final few minutes his time was bettered by Nick Heidfeld and almost equaled by Robert Kubica - perhaps a sign that BMW Sauber are going to try an agressive strategy to maximise Robert's chances. Both Ferraris languished in mid-field for the whole session. Mark Webber may need an engine change after what appeared to be a failure after 45 minutes.

| | The Win: Gordon is on the pole, and has been the best at Martinsville for ages. But I'm not a big Gordon fan, so I'm picking Harvick to win.
1) Aric "Amarillo" is in the 01 car this week. He gets a T20 finish, but Rusty still gets his name wrong.
2) the top non-chaser is a Roush car.
3) all 3 MWR cars are in the race, Reutimann gets the best finish of the 3.
4) Johnny Sauter, who is almost certainly out of the #70 next year, tries to show that's a mistake by finishing T15 on the lead lap.
5) no rookies finish on the lead lap.

Weather: Dry [I don't have the full weather details]
Notes: Lewis Hamilton went out early and set a quick time which was over one second faster than anyone else. Although the gap was reduced no one was able to better his first time.
Several drivers had spins or went off track, but none suffered any serious damage. Both Ferrari's appeared relatively slow, while Renault's recent form continued.
