ChampCar push-to-pass button

Ric Zito 8 April 2005 20:44:46
Makes around 50 extra bhp available, but you only have around 60secs
worth, to use as you will over the course of a whole race.

Good, or bad idea?

I've heard the ITV commentary team talking about F1 cars having push-to-pass
buttons this year. I suspect it is not the same thing that the Champ car
series uses, but is probably just terminology that James Allen has picked up
and thinks it is cool to use. Does anybody know if F1 has really adopted
this idea, or is he just referring to the drivers ability to change the
upper limit of the rev-limiter to give a bit of extra power for short
periods of time?

My own opinion of the time-limited Champ car implementation is that it
sounds too much like a gimmick. I say let each driver use it as much as he
wants to, let them risk blowing a few engines!

Hmm, maybe he's aiming for a job with an American broadcaster. We can but
hope!

He should drop the word straightaway...

The Champcar version permits turbo overboost - so the F1 version isn't>going to be that. I'd *guess* that it temporarily lifts the rev limit>and has the car running full-rich.>
That is exactly what it is. Since the "two race engines" came into
existence they've had to limit revs a few hundred lower. So push to
pass simply allows the extra revs for a blast past. This not only may
damage the engine but mucks with fuel strategy, so there are only
three of them available (or so we were told).
James Allen's commentary is littered with inappropriate Americanisms;>I've heard "straightaway" creeping in recently...>
I've heard the McLaren team using the same term to DC in Oz. They were
telling him and i paraphrase here :
Pit: "David, you have push to pass".
DC : "How many do i have ?"
Pit: "You have two David, you can push to pass"

You heard the McLaren team on the radio to DC? That must have been one hell
of a long time delay on that transmission! :D

Come to think, of it, ain't that the Schumacher tactic?

No, the Schumacher tactic is to crash into any driver who dares to attempt
to overtake him when a World Championship is at stake. The other Schumacher
tactic is to ignore black flags...

ptp is a joke. 50 extra hp is hardly noticeble when you have over 800 hp.
Make it 200 hp, then it would be interesting!

That's nothing, in some places you have to toss an empty beer can at the
guy you just hit-to-pass and if you run out of beer, you have to sneak up
to his trailer later on and let the air out of his tyres.

The Champcar version permits turbo overboost -

It does not. Boost is limited by the "pop-off" valve.
so the F1 version isn't>going to be that. I'd *guess* that it temporarily lifts the rev limit>and has the car running full-rich.>

...Well aren't you just the perfect precious Polly.
