| | It's a weekend with a full compliment of practices and qualifying. Smoke managed to shred a tire and is in a backup. Let's see what other madness we may be seeing.
Winner: David Reutimann gets his first (I think). David has been the only bright spot for MWR and has a pretty good starting spot. I don't think he will blow it.
1. DEJr scores a top five. I was waffling between Jr and Reutimann for the win. I think Jr will be up there in the thick of it.
2. Smoke will fight and claw his way from the rear (starting 43rd in a backup car) but he will push it too hard and either wreck of fade and finish outside the top-15.
3. Bad weekend for Petty Enterprises, so far. Bobby Labonte qualified 35th and McCumbee was a DNQ. It will not get much better as the 43 finishes outside the top 30.
4. Paul Menard is having a good weekend. It'll continue as he posts a top 10.
5. Only 5 chasers starting in the top 5. No more than 5 Chasers will finish in the top 5.

| RPG - Texas - McCoy John McCoy 20:01:31 |
| | Kind of a weird set of names at the top of the speed chart in practice, and no qualifying runs to give any hints of who'll be fast...
The Win: Denny Hamlin. Keeping the no repeat winners streak going at Texas.
1: No Hendrick cars in the T5.
2: DE Jr gets a T5
3: Stewart gets a T5
4: Labonte, who practiced well, gets a T15 on his "home" track.
5: Mark Martin finishes behind David Ragan.
bonus: the driver of the second pace car isn't paying attention during the warmup laps, and all the guys behind him get a wrong reading on their tachs for pit road speed. NASCAR sends 20 cars to the tail end of the longest line following the first pit stop.

Kimi RДikkЖnen failed to improve on his final, low-fuel softer-tyres, run, ending up in twelfth place.

Hey, got another one. Next year's rookie battle might be quite interesting - Ambrose, Speed, and Logano look to be fairly equal. I agree. But, will Marcos be an "official" rookie next year?? I think the cut-off is 6 Cup starts before they lose their "rookie" status and they have Marcos slated for the final three races on the 47. That will be at least 4 plus any others he has run in the past couple of years.

| New F1 test track Rui Pedro Mendes Salgueiro 16:15:07 |
| | As you might know there is a new F1 test track near Portim o, in Algarve, Portugal. The first test will be in December 15-17 with McLaren, Honda and maybe others. It is not yet known if it will be included in the list of allowed test tracks for 2009.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aut%C3%B3dromo_Internacional_do_Algarve
The strongs points of this track are: - the weather (for instance, today it is sunny, although cold, there) - Tilke was _NOT_ involved; - the architects adjusted the track layout to the relief and it shows.
You can find a number of videos of the track in youtube (search for Aut dromo Portim o or Aut modromo Algarve). On those videos you can see the large altitude differences, which will cause some difficulties to the drivers (IIRC in the middle of the parabolica there is a sudden drop and in another place the braking zone for a corner starts before you can actually see the corner).
Also, today and tomorrow there is a superbike race there. So if you have Eurosport you can see the track there (I think it is live in the British Eurosport at this moment).

They were also more affected by the rain showers than some of the others. Fernando Alonso shot to the top on his final run - on the softer, option, tyres.

| Tony poised to win another championship Sg 02:07:51 |
| | INDIANAPOLIS (TSR) – A champion will tell you that capturing that first title is the most difficult, and once you have it in your hands, you’ll never want to let it go. Since winning his first Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series championship in October 2006, Donny Schatz has done everything he can to not leave Sprint Car racing’s top spot. Following last year’s WoO title, he joined Tony Stewart Racing (TSR), and by simply taking the green flag behind the wheel of the TSR No. 15 Armor All/Chevy/ParkerStore J&J in both feature events during this weekend’s VAULT World Finals at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway, he’ll clinch his third straight WoO championship.

The Win: Edwards is fast in practice (you wonder why, if they have time for not one but two practice sessions, they can't get qualifying in), but I think he'll slow as the race wears on. I'll go with Kevin Harvick for the win, since he's run this track fairly well over the years. Nope - kinda hung around 10th, never contended,
Best Ford: I'll pick Biffle over Edwards, and probably regret it. See comment above (and hand me a couple of MVM points for correctly predicting my regret).
Best Toyota: Reutimann seems to have been fastest (by quite a bit in practice), but I doubt he'll maintain that in the race (altho I'd be mighty happy if he did). I'll take Hamlin for best Toyota. Hey, got one.
Best Dodge: I think I'll go with JPM this week, even tho he wasn't too far up the practice charts. Looked likely for a good bit of the race.
Best Rookie: 5 to pick from this week: Smith, Hornish, Ambrose, Speed, and McCumbee. It looks like the DEI cars are running well, so I'll go with Smith. Nope.
Battle of next year's rookies: Ambrose finishes ahead of Speed finishes ahead of McCumbee (and they all finish ahead of Sliced Bread, who isn't in the show thanks to the rain). Hey, got another one. Next year's rookie battle might be quite interesting - Ambrose, Speed, and Logano look to be fairly equal.
race: +2 chase: +11

| Leading the WDC Brian Lawrence 16:00:19 |
| | After the end of last season I compiled a list which showed how many events and how many days various drivers had led the WDC table.
The number of events and durations do not include the final event of the season or the off season - they only include time and events while the season is 'active'. However, both events and time include any where the WDC was confirmed before the final race.
Lewis Hamilton goes into next week's Brazilian GP in the lead, and both the number of events and time will cease on November 2 regardless of the result.
Hamilton has added another 12 events and 155 days to his tally; RДikkЖnen has added 4 events/63 days; Massa (2 events/28 days) and Kubica (one event/14 days) are new entries.

| Simmons - RPG - Atlanta II - 6/23 Mike Simmons 02:06:18 |
| | So without further adieu, here is my picks for the top five and some random RPG's.
In no order
Edwards -1 Kenseth -1 Johnson -1 Biffle -0 Gordon, J. - 0
and the winner? Cuzzin Carl +3 Yippee!
It looks as if it could be a Roushketeer romp as Ragan could squeeze into the top five. My system uses past history at the track and Ragan hasn't always fared so well at Atlanta since he came to Cup, but I think my system may be skewing him downward in spite of a strong closing season.
The UNIVAC kept putting Smoke and Bowyer in the top five, but I allowed my gut to overrule it this week and instead picked the Biffster and Jeffro to prevail, we shall see......
Both the UNIVAC and my gut wuz wrong

Winner: Ryan Newman. He won his first ever truck start today It should have given his a taste of blood. +0 Nope. Moved up close to the top 10 early on and then something must have happened as he ended up laps down.
1. Marcos Ambrose is going to finish out the season in the #47, formerly the #00, with a mission to move it into the top 35 in points. He will finish in the top 20. +0 He finished in 29th which is higher than he started, but not high enough for my guess.
2. Casey Mears is a new Daddy and baby needs new shoes already. A top 10 for Casey. +0 12th place. Guess baby will have to settle for J-Mart specials this time.
3. Bobby Labonte is being picked by some on NASCAR.com as the dark horse to win, but he isn't showing it in practice. As much as it pains me to say it, Bobby Labonte will finish outside the top 20. +1 It pains me to take this point, but a points a point.
4. Juan Pablo Montoya will finish in the top 15. +0 Shucks darn!!! JPM was inside the top 10 and looking good until Clint sideswiped him on pit road.... Then he got caught up in someone else's wreck.
5. Standard loser when there the chasers are all starting at the front, but I'm committed. No more than 5 chasers in the top 12. +0 7 chasers made it.

| RPG - Atlanta - McCoy John McCoy 01:07:19 |
| | The Win: Kasey Kahne. He's been fast on this track before, and after having some bad luck with fast cars the past couple of weeks, I think he's due for some good luck.
1 - despite a very strong qualifying run, Mike Bliss and the BAM car finish at least 2 laps down.
2 - precisely 2 Hendrick cars are in the T10, and one of them is Johnson.
3 - JPM finishes on the lead lap.
4 - the Toyotas finish Blaney, Vickers, Reutimann, Jarrett.
5 - the Rousch cars finish Kenseth, Edwards, Biffle, McMurray, Ragan.
bonus - the top 5 consists of Menard, JPM, Reutimann, Ragan, and almost rookie Gilliland.
non-points-scoring-extra-bonus-RPG - Mikey will extend his negative driver points record to 8 races, but will finally manage to qualify for the 9th race.
