Radio messages taped

Dave R knows who 4 April 2005 23:00:30
Am I the only one who thinks the radio audio we hear is playback? Like the
bits they give you at the end of the qualifying lap? It just doesn't seem
live to me. How is it they always tune into the radio just in time to get a
team comment and drivers reply?

They sounded live to me. For example, at Australia the pit told Sato to
slow down 'cos of the poor weather and he was already stopped after
smacking the wall and replied "Too late".
It just doesn't seem > live to me. How is it they always tune into the radio just in time to get a > team comment and drivers reply?

I think the director (or someone) prolly listens in to various team's
channels and decides which radio to play on the TV.

Possible playback, but mostly live, I'd say. Plus the teams have the
possibility to "talk privately"when they want, without being broadcast, they
have a switch on the systems. They don't want the whole world to hear about
strategies and the like. Speaking of qualifying, I think the radio is live,
it's the usual talk after crossing the line. Position, time, "save fuel,
switch early, watch your mirror". The TV crew just listens to them, when
they cross the line.

It's delayed by a few seconds just in case someone swears.

ISTR an Alonso-Renault conversation from Australia '05. He asked: "Is this
Michael in front of me? I thought he was f***ed" [1]
It was Barrichello being lapped by Alonso. Michael was already out after
colliding with Heidfeld.

[1] I might as well be wrong, of course.

Just as I thought. It's recorded, they make quick clip of it, and then play
it back when TV is ready.

Yep, seems so, Martin Brundle pointed this out one race. Saying how it's not
quite insync with what we're seeing...

I don't believe it that much of a delay, a few seconds at most, I
believe I heard 8 seconds one time. That would be a FAST tape
manipulator!

No you had it wrong. There is no waiting for TV to be ready. There is a
short but constant artificial delay to the feed. This is true of a lot of
'live' broadcasting. It is still a stream not recorded clips.

How is it they put "Radio" on the screen and within seconds the "stream"
begins, just in time. And they do it perfectly every time.

In the USA for NASCAR etc there is often long pauses of dead air when the
announcers try this. The FIA has never had any such trouble. How is that
possible?

They werent live in Australia.
I was at the track with my scanner radio, so could hear many of the
transmissions as they actually happened... and then moments later I'd
see/hear them pop up on the trackside TV screens. Somebody else
said 8 seconds. That sounds about right. I didnt hear the 'too
late' on my scanner, but I did hear "I couldnt do *anything*".

One of the things we heard on the Bahrain telecast was Sato being
coached/guided (not quite sure what the term is) as he approached
turn 1. Jock Clear also did this in Melbourne, but it was nowhere
near as useful. It was something like:
"I cant see you, I cant see you, I cant see you, I cant see you, you're
all clear."

(Sato was on 457.8875 Mhz)

OH, so if "NASCAR" can't do it, how could F1???

If there's an 8 second delay you just have people listening to the live feed
and when they hear something good they can hit the "Radio" button, switch to
the 8 second delayed feed, and switch it to the broadcast audio when
appropriate. It's not rocket science.

GD,

Is there any possibility of you posting more team/driver frequencies you
discovered from Melbourne please?

They may of course change frequencies through the season, depending upon
location etc, but it's always welcome to have some sort of starting
point when scanning, and test days at Silverstone are so much more
interesting when one is able to listen in on the scanner.

Even better is the advice for you to join the 'f1scanner' yahoo group.

I'm more surprised they don't have more of that, TBH. Sounds like a good
idea 'cos the driver can concentrate on what's in front of him and rely
on the pits telling him who's in his blind spot(s).

Come on, we talk about nanoseconds. What good does it do if they have
gone to stratosphere already before the sentence is finished?

I was under the impression it was delayed because they do not know
