Groved tyres?

Depresion 31 March 2005 11:32:55
This has probably been asked before but why did the FIA decide that groves where
the way to go rather than simply making the tyres narrower?

Because it would have been too expensive for the manufactrers to change the
size of their moulds etc. So cutting grooves achieved the same thing.

Because Max had a hankering for the old days and he remembered tyres
with tread. Grooves look more like treaded tyres than narrower slicks
would.

Possibly also that if they reduced the width of the tyres, it would
decrease drag, and thereby allow the cars to go quicker down the
straights, which would be counter productive to the aim of slowing them
down. So by introducing grooves, they reduce the contact patch, thereby
slowing them in the corners, while maintaining the straight line drag.
