RPG - The Nextel - McCoy

John McCoy 20 May 2005 04:54:29
I don't beleive Russ was counting this one, back when he was
deciding where to break the RPG season, but I'm gonna guess
for it anyway :-)

1) Jimmie Johnson wins from...

2) Greg Biffle in second.

Both of these guys are hot this year, and both run decent on this
sort of track.

3) Keeping the Rousch versus Hendrick theme of the year, both
Gordon and Edwards top-5.

4) Bobby Labonte is first out. Luck is simply agin him this
year - he's either going to break or get caught up in someone
else's wreck and be scored last.

5) Jeff Burton wins the Open. He's pretty much the best of
those in that field.

(5a if Burton wins the fan vote _and_ does not run in the Open,
then I pick Blaney to win the Open).

I invite everyone to do it for fun but I wasn't planning on counting it.

I know I'm very biased toward my favorite driver, but even factoring
that bias out, I have to ask: really? Burton and Blaney are the best
of the Open field?

Here are the drivers who are currently ahead of Jeff Burton who are
eligible for the Open and are currently ranked in NASCAR standings:

20052004
*18 Burton, Jeff 1 top 5s/2 top 10s 2 top 5s/6 top 10s/18th
* 9 McMurray, Jamie 3 top 5s/5 top 10s9 top 5s/23 top 10s/11th

Here are the drivers who are ahead of Dave Blaney (in addition to JB
and JMc) who aren't already in the All Star race:

20052004
24 Blaney, Dave 0 top 5s/1 top 10s0 top 5s/0 top 10s/38th
23 Riggs, Scott 1 top 5s/3 top 10s1 top 5s/2 top 10s/29th
22 Busch, Kyle 2 top 5s/3 top 10sn/a
*19 Marlin, Sterling 1 top 5s/3 top 10s3 top 5s/7 top 10s/21st

* drivers currently in the Chase (in top 10 or w/in 400 pts of leader)

I would be surprised if Jamie doesn't win the Open, especially given
his strong showing last year (until he was bumped). I would think he
might win the All Star vote (he had been 4th behind Truex, Harvick, and
Kahane the last time the vote totals were displayed, but I am pretty
sure that the DEJr fans are power voting Truex in. which, by the way,
I think is a total joke. it's an "all star" race and they're voting in
someone currently 48th in the standings, with 2 starts with an average
finish this year of 27.5.)

Like the drivers', "nothing to lose", "may-as-well go for the win" attitude
COMBINED with his new, more powerful (perhaps unapproved and therefore illegal)
anti-gimme force field, John's goin' for it!

(I'm going to use the tack that, since it's an off points week the gimme police
in the chatroom-of-doom are sleeping. shhh, back to sleep, Russ.)

Burton is, in my not noticably humble opinion :-)

I would not put Blaney as second, he's just a fill-in guess in
case Burton doesn't run, which I don't expect to happen. I like
Blaney a lot, but there's 4 or 5 guys in the Open field who've
shown more capability over the past few years.
