Valentino Rossi won a controversial opening round of the 2005 MotoGP series. After following and studying Gibernau for 90% of the race, Rossi decided to make his move and take the lead. However, what happened on the final lap of the race was something not even Hollywood could have written.

Rossi made a mistake in the middle-section of the track, and opened the door to Gibernau, who by now was three tenths of a second behind. Both men went to battle and in this case Rossi was forced to make a late-braking maneuver on Gibernau at the last corner, Gibernau closed the door on Rossi, but Rossi was already committed. Neither man gave way and both collided. The collision caused Gibernau to run off track, who quickly returned and finished second to Rossi.
