New Dodge Charger (was RPG ... Julia)

I just noticed it for the first time this weekend.

I like the look of the Dodge pickup trucks.
I suppose I could live with a Dodge Charger
if someone donated it to me.

I hate the look of the nose on the NASCAR
Chargers. I'll bet it gives the aero shop fits.
They were complaining about the nose
sucking up track debris and causing overheating.
Perhaps the perpendicular grille was not a good
way to go.

I loved the look of the Dodges up to now. I dread
to think what may happen to the Fords when the
Tauroids are retired.

unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to be changed anytime
soon:

==============
Before the race at Darlington, Dodge Motorsports director John
Fernandez said the manufacturer had not made any requests to NASCAR for
any rules concessions -- and had no plans to.

"We want to see how the season goes before we would do that," Fernandez
said. "We're still working hard on the new car and the aero balance.

"I think it's up to us to make sure we do everything we can, and we
haven't done everything we can yet before we go to NASCAR."

[snip]

Fernandez said the car's nose configuration, which was a cause for
great concern in the beginning of the year, has also been improved.

"We've improved the front end as the season has gone on. We've had less
and less problem with that. We haven't been to NASCAR and said we've
got major issues with that (nose) yet."

The first time I saw the nose, my thought was "why's that nose allowed?
It'll give the car more front-end downforce than the others!"

In other words, the design of the car makes it pre-determined to be
looser on a neutral setup than Fords or Chevies. Loose is fast, and as
the natural tendancy of a car is to go tight as a run goes on, if you
can get more aero-grip than others, especially at the front end so you
don't have to load up the suspension as much, you have an advantage.

I still think when I look at the car that it's a downforce car. Look at
how well the Dodges ran in qualifying; that didn't translate onto the
longer run, but don't forget that picking up debris is a consequence of
the car sucking up onto the track, so perhaps there's balance there. And
this was an impound race, so there would have been a tradeoff between
qualifying speed and race speed. If the Dodge chiefs get a handle on the
setup and the aero guys can find a way of not hoovering up all the
debris, you've got a scary car there.

The nose is IIRC the only part of the car which dosen't fall under all
the templates that NASCAR set. So Dodge are within the rules, but I
think they're stretching them with *that* nose.

I think Ford will do the same thing, and use their bit of the template
to build in more aero downforce.

The Chevies have got some of the Dodge look, too, with
indented headlight areas.

I'd be happy to see some Dodges back in victory lane.
So long as the wins came at the expense of Hendrix and
not Roush. :-O

It's a preapproved part, FWIW.

The grille does bear a resemblance to the one used
on the street Charger.

The nose isn't covered by the body templates, but it is a seperately
approved part, and won't pass inspection if it's not from the correct
company with the correct part number. The teams apparently have some
freedom to cut the plastic to open up the holes (so they can increase
the amount of adjustability they get with tape), but they can't change
the overall shape from what NASCAR approved.

Unless of course, NA$CAR believes parity has not been reached.
10 races--Chevy-5W, Ford-5W, Dodge-ZeroW.

Is it time yet to give Dodge a new nose like they did in '01 at Indy?
Dodge proceeded to get 4 Wins & 3 2nds in the next 14 races.
John Andretti had a 2nd at 6.Bristol previous to the Dodge 'parity'.

Interesting question.

I like the fact that NASCAR seems to have lessened the number of
in-season aero changes. There was a time when that seemed to
be a weekly bone of contention.

I can't predict what will happen--nor am I sure what I'd recommended
if anyone cared about my opinion. I like a certain amount of
stability, but I also like parity.

OK, the sacred RPG coin says "tails." Don't change a
thing. "I love you just the way you are."

Dodge has to ask for one....NASCAR might offer them a tad more spoiler
or to lower the air dam (altho I hope NASCAR doesn't and by all
accounts they have no intention of trying that sort of aero-matching),
but NASCAR will not mandate a new nose.
