There are a number of online phone books with reverse number lookup -- I use
switchboard.com all the time -- and these sites get their info by buying phone
book listings from the phone company. Prior to the increase in popularity of
Algore's greatest invention, some software companies sold nationwide phone books
on CD-ROM.

Best way to protect your privacy, if you're concerned, is to have an unlisted
number. My phone number is unlisted and putting it into Google or Switchboard
pulls up nothing.

Much ado about nothing if you ask me. If your number is listed it can be
found via reverse lookup on countless number of sites. If a pervert is
smart enough to do a reverse lookup they're smart enough to enter the
address found in mapquest.

Want privacy? Don't list your numbers.

mapquest has had this feature for a long time - you can even (or at least
you used to be able to) get the phone numbers of all the neighbors, then
using reverse look up, get their names. It's amazing what's out there.
