Carb Question

NASCAR Notebook
Busch team gets boot for illegal carburetor
COMPILED BY MIKE MULHERN

Since NASCAR officials inspect carburetors before each race, it is unclear
how NASCAR inspectors might have approved the carburetor, then found it
illegal later.
NASCAR officials didn't address that issue.

Usually they inspect the carb by sticking a cylindrical test piece
(a "go-nogo gauge") into each barrel - if it goes in, the carb is
no good. Possibly the initial inspector was distracted, and didn't
put the gauge in straight, so it appeared not to go in. Possibly
the carb is the kind with removable sleeves in the venturies, and
the team took them out on pit road after inspection. Possibly the
carb was massaged by a tricky machinist and doesn't have round
venturies (that would probably be a pain to jet!).

My guess is the inspector wasn't paying attention first time round.

It does not necessarily mean that inspectors "approved" the part.
They could have missed it, or not even checked it.
It does not mean that because it made it past PRE inspection,
that therefore it is legal.

It has to be legal AFTER the race.

All of those "low" car penalties... they were okay PRE race....

if it past prerace inspection, then there should be no infraction on the
teams' part..........

id fight it to the supreme court, if the team isnt guilty.....

how bout suspend the inspector ??

I agree, and I'll bet only 1.5 sides of the story have really been heard, if
that.
I heard today that the carb was changed AFTER qualifying.> That would explain the big penalty, if true..

But what about "The Impound"? Somebody break into the pound?

Do you know, for sure, what happened??

I heard today that the carb was changed AFTER qualifying.

Again. Just because you get something past an official early,
does not mean the car is legal.
It's legal when it is found to be legal, AFTER the race.
If you "think" you may have pulled one over on them,
you still run the risk of getting caught.
I don't feel bad for anyone that gets caught with an illegal part.
A low car, a light car, can be just something that happens.
Having an illegal carb, doesn't just "happen".

Which is usually the case....
So many things are mentioned, in such a short time,
that the real deal gets buried in the speculation.
I heard today that the carb was changed AFTER qualifying.>> That would explain the big penalty, if true..

Evidently there was a period of time at some point where
some work could take place.
I think that may have been a contributing factor to the
unusually stiff penalty... IF it indeed happened.
All I know, is that I have not seen/heard anywhere, officially,
where the SAME carb was legal, then not legal.

Last night on teevee James Finch said he gave nascar the carb to check pre-race,
nascar checked the carb, put it on and sealed it (and charged JF $900 for the
inspection) then killed 'em after the race. Said inspectors had lost their jobs
over it.

Now we're at 1.75 sides of the story.
