Somebody remind me how this catch up thing works again. Our friend
here already has a -5 for Atlanta. If the above picks yield a negative
score, it seems like that's double jeopardy.

When you make extra picks at one race to make up for missing an earlier
race, it seems like the score for the missed race should be amended to
zero. Otherwise, there's a disincentive to do "make up" picks and risk
going even further in the hole.

Unless, of course, it's a five point penalty for missing a race....

What say der rule judge?

In the past he's always given a -5 for a no-show. then we've been able to
make an attempt in a later race with the new score replacing the -5

if that's not the case then I want to re-order my predictions :)

Are you sure that fits the bonus requirement of being an extremely
rare, once in a lifetime event? :-) :-)

I don't know why I drew such a blank on this. Now that you mention it,
I do remember the provision that the -5 can be replaced by the extra
picks that are specifically designated to make up for the missed race.

Of course setting the missed race to zero and scoring the
double-predicted race as predicted for that race has the same overall
effect.

Exactly so -- doing double picks by arrangement makes for the same overall
impact and is a method to deal with missed races fairly. I remove the zero
or the -5 (depending which chart you're looking at) to make it work.

You can do more than 5 picks any week you like though, that's up to you and
how lucky you feel.
